Are you selling or about to sell your home? In today’s economy, selling a
home can be a daunting experience and if you’re approaching the process the wrong
way, it might be a very long time before you find a willing buyer. A
slow-selling home can become a financial liability very quickly. In most cases,
prospective home buyers will decide if the house they’re viewing will be their
new home in 60-seconds or less. That doesn’t leave you with much time to make a
great impression.
You’ve seen
the television shows, seen those home make-overs, heard the buzzwords and read
the statistics, but when you look at your own space, are you inspired or do you
draw a blank? In this program, Guest Speaker, Marie Graham, introduces and
discussed the concept of “Home Staging”. You’ll learn to put your home’s “best
foot forward” so that prospective buyers can more easily see themselves living
there. In other words, the focus is on your space, not on your stuff.
If you have
made a commitment to sell your home, bring a pad of paper and your questions to
this free program. You can even bring a few photographs. And be certain to
bring an open mind. You’ll learn how to see your home through the eyes of a
prospective buyer, and even more importantly, how to make the most of those
60-seonds.The program will be presented
by Ms. Marie Graham and will take place at the Greenburgh Public Library, 300
Tarrytown Road, Elmsford, NY 10523. Free and open to the public.

The Westchester Society of the Archaeological Institute of America
presents “BABYLON TODAY”, a fascinating presentation of the current work being
done through international collaborative efforts to rehabilitate the site of
Ancient Babylon in Iraq.Since 2004, the
World Monuments Fund (WMF) has been working with the Iraq State Board of
Antiquities and Heritage (SBAH) with the primary focus of the collaboration
being the development of a site management plan for Babylon, one of the world's
most important archaeological sites. The program will be presented by Ms. Lisa
Ackerman and will take place at the Greenburgh Public Library, 300 Tarrytown
Road, Elmsford, NY 10523. The event is free and open to all.
Babylon
represents one of the most important archaeological sites in the world.
Babylon’s fame extends beyond the fact that the site dates to a time more than
4,000 years ago. Babylon achieved military fame, was the capital of a vast
ancient empire, and contributed greatly to our knowledge of the ancient world
through the study of the Code of Hammurabi, an 18th-century B.C. set of laws by
which the society was ruled. Babylonia was a prosperous land and the remains
today give scholars great insight into the sophisticated world in which Babylon
was created and thrived.
Working with
the SBAH, WMF assists in mapping the archaeological site, identifying essential
conservation projects, planning for tourism management, and helping to begin
the process of readying the site for local and international tourists, which
will include the eventual reopening of the site's two museums. In addition to
well publicized efforts of UNESCO and its ICC Sub-Committee on Babylon’s report
on current conditions, the WMF is assisting in the necessary architectural and
archaeological conservation work at the site. WMF personnel have been on site
in Iraq a number of times in recent months so this program will include many
images of the restoration and rehabilitation efforts at the site that have not
been widely seen.

The Korean Spirit and Culture Promotion Project
(KCSPP), a non-profit organization dedicated to raising awareness of Korean
history and culture in the United States, presents a unique program that
focuses on fifty of the most amazing Korean treasures from antiquity as well as
modern times.
The program will take place at the Greenburgh Public Library, 300 Tarrytown
Road, Elmsford, NY 10523. Following the presentation, there will be a delicious
array of Korean delicacies served. The event is free and open to all.
Featured in the presentation
are such “wonders” as the Sarira Reliquary of Kamuensa Temple, the Sokkuram
Grotto (both dating back as far as 57 AD) and the Koryo Buddhist paintings from
the Koryo Dynasty (918-1392 AD). The works bear a common theme of “hidden
beauty” and in each the true value of the work becomes visible on close
inspection by the viewer. Each and every treasure featured will inspire the
viewer toward a new appreciation for the beauty of Korea. The program also
strives to educate those attending as to the impact that Korea has had on life
and culture in the United States.
Korean cuisine is
getting attention throughout the world for its health benefits and delicious
taste. Of course, no Korean meal would be complete without the ubiquitous
Kimchi, a fermented vegetable dish that was essential in
wintertime. Traditionally, fresh vegetables were scarce in winter.
Kimchi, therefore, was the main source of vitamins for Koreans in
wintertime. Nowadays each region has its own special Kimchi, reflecting
variations in climate and local traditions. There are about 200 different
types of Kimchi. Kimchi has been nominated by Health Magazine as one of the five
healthiest foods in the world and is now used by many international chefs. But
Korean cuisine is more than just food. In this program there will be a glimpse
of its wisdom and harmony that is at the root of its health benefits; in fact
it is said that "eating Korean food is liketasting the energy of
the entire universe".

The Teen Talk Book Club of the Greenburgh Public Library will read and discuss the young adult novel "Wintergirls" by Laurie Halse Anderson for their next club meeting on December 17, 2009, at the Greenburgh Public Library at 300 Tarrytown Road, Elmsford, NY 10523.
In the novel, narrator Jeannie Stith delivers this story's introductory scenes with
brutal harshness as Lia learns that her best friend, Cassie, has been
discovered dead in a hotel room. The two best friends had been
competitors in anorexia. Stith's staccato delivery is fitting for the
embattled Lia, who hides her self-starvation and cutting from the
perplexed adults who want to save her. Stith whispers Lia's compulsive
calorie counting and uses a muffled voice to deliver the haunting
speeches that Lia believes are coming from Cassie's restless spirit. In
her text Anderson uses italics, parentheses, and cross-outs to create
visual representations of Lia's torment; in the narration the tones
used to differentiate these are somewhat distracting. Still, Stith
takes listeners deep into Lia's dark and frightening fight for survival.
Laurie Halse Anderson is the author of the New York Times bestselling novel Speak, as well as Catalyst, Prom, and Twisted.
She is the recipient of the prestigious ALAN Award (2008), which honors
those who have made outstanding contributions to the field of
adolescent literature. Ms. Anderson lives in northern New York State
with her husband.
The Teen Talk Book Club is open to teens ages 13 to 18 years. Space is limited, so registration is required. Call (914) 721-8224 or email greenteen@greenburghlibrary.org to register. Membership in the club is free. The club is made possible in part, by a grant sponsored by Consolidated Edison and Westchester Library Systems.
