WESTCHESTER CYCLE CLUB JOINS IN “RIDE OF SILENCE” Westchester Cycle Club members and their friends will join in a free slow paced, worldwide “Ride of Silence” on Wednesday May 17th, 2006. This is being organized to honor cyclists killed or seriously injured by motorists when biking on our public roadways. Arranged during bike safety month, the ride also makes motorists aware of cyclists’ needs to share the road safely with them. Riders will meet at Hickory and Tweed Sport Shop, 410 Main Street in Armonk, at 6:30 pm, for departure at 7pm. Our route will be 7 miles, at a slow pace of no more than 12 mph. Cyclists from over 200 other locations in the United States and 8 countries from around the world will also participate in this event. The “Ride of Silence” began three years ago when an experienced endurance cyclist in Texas was hit by the mirror of a passing bus and killed. Initially, this was organized as a one-time happening. Public demand has made it an annual event. At the request of Westchester Cycle Club member Barbara Stein and her friend Sally Sullivan, the ride will honor the memory of White Plains resident Barbara Tuszynska who was killed by a truck last September when riding on route 172 in Bedford. It will also commemorate the memory of the over 700 other cyclists who have been killed or seriously injured on public roadways this year. This ride has been organized during bike advocacy month to make motorists aware of cyclists’ presence, and to acknowledge the fact that cyclists have the legal right to share the roads with motorists. The ride will be escorted by cyclists from the Armonk police department.
