THROUGH A DOG’S EYES
Presented by the SPCA of Westchester County, NY
(Pleasantville, NY—April 8, 2006)- Dog trainers, student volunteers, and shelter dogs from the SPCA of Westchester County will “bark it up,” at Pace University’s Wilcox Gymnasium on Saturday, April 8th from 12-3 PM. The program will demonstrate positive reinforcement training methods and offer information about local shelters and issues involving companion animals in the area and around the country. Members from the Westchester SPCA will present information on a variety of subjects ranging from the influx of homeless animals due to Hurricane Katrina, to dog training that sheds light on how dogs might think.
Co-hosted by Pace University’s Animals and Society class taught by Professor Tracy Basile, the event will feature the special skills and talents of the SPCA shelter dogs whom have all been taught using positive reinforcement training methods. Basic skills such as the “sit” command are taught at the shelter to enable to the dogs to “fit in,” to their “forever homes” once adopted. Knowledge of this training method can aid current pet owners dealing with animal behavioral issues.
A number of students in the event-hosting class spend a large portion of their semester volunteering at the SPCA shelter. They have gained knowledge and understanding of the importance of humane training. The desire to share this information with the general public paired with a longing to generate volunteer and adoption interest at the shelter has led to this event. With the shelter dogs starring in the event, it should be both informative and exciting!
