GARDENING WITH HARDY ORCHIDS - The guest lecturer for the GWOS meeting will be William Mathis. He has a degree in botany and a PhD in agronomy from the University of Arkansas. In 2000 when early retirement became a reality, he put his long time interest in gardening and terrestrial orchids into practice and started the Wild Orchid Co. which grows a variety of "showy" upland and wetland terrestrial orchid species and hybrids along with a variety of exotic companion plants. The different species the company grows and sells are native to North America, Europe and Asia. Currently, Dr Mathis is working with hybrids of several Bletilla Cypripedium, Calopogon, Arethusa and Calanthe species in an effort to select specific plants for future cloning. He is also working on inducing polyploidy in selected species. In 2005, Dr Mathis published the Gardener's Guide to Growing Hardy Terrestrial Orchids, a "How To" book focusing on a non-technical and practical approach to the successful culture of various species of hardy terrestrial orchids.
Come and join us to hear his lecture. Also join the culture corner to learn how to grow your orchids better. See what our members are blooming on windowsills, under lights, and in their greeenhouses at our showtable display.
