Stepinac Alumni Theatre WORKING for the Summer by: Brian McGrathBrian McGrath is a graduate of Archbishop Stepinac High School and a White Plains Resident. It was not too long ago that Joseph Lore was walking up and down the hallways of Archbishop Stepinac. He attended classes during the day and rehearsal for the musical in the afternoon and evenings.Fast forward six years later and Lore still finds himself attending rehearsals in the evening; however, it’s his day job that’s changed.Lore is now a project manager for Abbot & Price in Millwood, NY.In the evening, you will still find him back at his alma mater in rehearsal for the musical Working to be presented July 30th – August 3rd on Stepinac’s front terrace.Workingis a modern musical which tells the story of the “everyday” man and woman over the course of a typical 24 hour day.The hopes, dreams, and struggles of the characters are told through the music & lyrics of Broadway veteran Stephen Schwartz, legendary story-teller James Taylor, and many others. The show is a celebration of American life spotlighting the lives of many blue-collar workers including those of a fireman, millworker, mason, truck driver, school teacher, waitress, and housewife.
Many of the dram club’s alumni/ae have now entered the working world. They have learned it’s not as easy to make rehearsals with the daily stresses of a full-time job.Good Counsel alumnae Beth Apfel recently rushed into rehearsal. She hopped directly off the Metro North train and headed to rehearsal.Apfel is an advertisement services coordinator for the New YorkerMagazine.“Coming in from the city makes it difficult to continue my commitment. But I am determined to do this every summer.Seeing old friends and sharing some laughs makes it worth the sacrifice.”Apfel plays the school teacher, Rose Hoffman. She got her inspiration from fellow Good Counsel alumnae and cast mate, Elaine Surovich.Elaine is a math teacher at Rye High School.Surovich states, “The show really captures the innate goodness and patriotism of each of these characters.Beth’s character only wants what is best for her students despite their resistance.”Surovich plays a waitress this summer leaving the chalkboard behind until September.
The Stepinac Alumni Theatre includes former alumni of Archbishop Stepinac High School in White Plains, NY and Good Counsel Academy in White Plains, NY along with neighboring female Catholic schools. Many of the cast members including director, Frank Portanova, and producer, Alfred Menna, are residents of the White Plains area.
As Stepinac’s oldest alumni organization, the alumni theatre is dedicated to providing alumni of Stepinac and its sister schools with the opportunity to continue developing their talents and provide enjoyable entertainment to the Westchester community. When most people tend to leave their high school years behind, the alumni/ae return to perform as they once did on Stepinac’s stage. For its 45th year, the Alumni Theatre is cultivating the theatrical arts program of the school by using the net proceeds raised from the show to benefit the Stepinac Drama Club, Drama Curriculum, and the Westchester Broadway Dinner Theatre’s Bob Fitzsimmons ’72 Memorial Scholarship.
