Vankenn Productions will present a concert of gospel songs that will take the audience through the evolution of gospel music in the United States. According to Sarah Lawrence College alumna Vandalyn Kennedy, “Gospel music has developed as a unique American art form, deeply rooted in the spiritual and social plight of African-Americans.Birthed out of musical traditions of a people in transition from Africa to America, this once church bound music can now be heard in the finest concert halls in the country.” American gospel music, a genre of its own, having originated in rural churches has expanded from traditional to hip-hop gospel, from religious to popular culture.
