Bruce D. Perry, M.D., Ph. D., Senior Fellow at The Child Trauma Academy will speak as the Child Development Institute’s Longfellow Lecturer. In his clinical research and practice, Dr. Perry focuses on high-risk children examining long-term cognitive, behavioral, emotional, social, and physiological effects of neglect and trauma in children and adults, with the goal of promoting positive change within institutions such as child protective services, mental health, public education and juvenile justice. This work has been very helpful in explaining how traumatic experiences during childhood can change the biology of the brain, which affects the overall health of the child.Dr. Perry co-authored a book with Maia Szalavitz, called, The Boy Who Was Raised as a Dog: What Traumatized Children Can Teach Us about Loss, Love and Healing. He has authored over 300 journal articles, book chapters and scientific proceedings, and has received a number of awards including the T.
