On October 3, 2009 at 11:00 am, mothers and children at sites across the United States, Canada and other countries, will compete to set the record for the most children breastfeeding at one time. The winners of the competition will be the site with the most children breastfeeding at one site, as a percentage of the birthrate, “latched on.” at 11am local time.
Full Circle Family Care, 1241 Mamaroneck Ave. White Plains, NY is a participating site for the breastfeeding challenge. We welcome all breastfeeding moms to come in to participate in this exciting challenge.
Why this challenge? Breastfeeding has many well-documented benefits including better health for both mothers and babies. However, many women fail to meet their own breastfeeding goals and wean their children prematurely, well before meeting recommended guidelines. Two of the biggest hurdles for mothers continue to be lack of support and marginalization by the community. In North America this lack of support is demonstrated as many women find breastfeeding in public a major barrier.
This event takes place as part of the celebration of World
Breastfeeding Week.The theme for World
Breastfeeding Week is Breastfeeding – a vital response,
referring to the key role breastfeeding plays in times of disasters, such as
monsoons and earthquakes, when clean water and appropriate food are often in
short supply.
The Breastfeeding Challenge is sponsored by the
Quintessence Foundation, a non-profit group providing education to parents and
professionals about breastfeeding.For
more information contact Quintessence Foundation at 604-228-9331 or visit the
website: www.babyfriendly.ca.

Plains site, please contact Rosie Murtagh for more

Sarah Lawrence College Crew Team to participate in the
Hudson Quadricentennial Celebration
Yonkers, N.Y.- As part of a yearlong Yonkers celebration of the Quadcentennial of Henry Hudson’s voyage up the Hudson River, Sarah Lawrence College’s men’s and women’s crew team members will row two, 4-oared Whitehall gig boats, the type of boat used in a lavish 300th anniversary celebration regatta in Yonkers in 1909. The
boats will launch from the Yonkers Rowing and Paddling Club on Alexander Street at 1 p.m. on Saturday, October 3, rowing south past the Yonkers Pier.
One hundred years ago, the State of New York commemorated the 300th anniversary of the discovery of the Hudson River by Henry Hudson with a series of boat races and events to celebrate the discoveries. The 1909 celebration was a catalyst for scenic, natural and historic preservation.
Below is a link from The New York Times archives, from 1909 covering the Yonkers regatta that year. Sunny weather is predicted for Saturday.

Menachem Zur Presents White Noise (12:45PM - 2:00PM) Sarah Lawrence College- Marshall Field Room 1FreeMenachem Zur, a professor at the Jerusalem Academy of Music & Dance, presents White Noise, a fast-paced work in which the flow of events is constantly disrupted. The title stems both from the use of noise to generate visual and musical elements, as well as to highlight the color palette within a piece’s central section.A product of a relatively new field of music named “visual music,” White Noise utilizes constantly shifting perspectives and abrupt juxtaposition of elements to evoke reflections on the chaos of everyday life. (Tarrytown, NY)…Losing a joboften means losing access to affordable health insurance — a double whammy inour present economy. These factors often contribute to physical and mentalhealth problems for the unemployed, especially when it takes months to find ajob.
Butnow individuals can learn about overlooked opportunities to protect theirhealth in a free workshop, Unemployed and Uninsured: Know Your Options, which will be held at the One Stop Employment Center, 120 Bloomingdale Road (ConferenceRoom C/D), White Plains. The workshop is free, but participants must beenrolled at a One Stop Employment Center to attend. The workshop sponsor isHudson Health Plan, which provides free and low-cost health insurance in theHudson Valley.
“Inproviding these workshops at One Stops, we will be able to easily reach theuninsured, and answer their questions about quality health and dental care,”explains Mark Santiago, Senior Vice President, Marketing & Communications,of not-for-profit Hudson. He emphasizes that even though jobless individualsmay be eligible for state-sponsored health insurance programs, they often don’tknow that these programs exist. “We encourage people to ask about insurance forthemselves and their children because their health may depend on access tohealth care. Studies show uninsured people skip screenings and avoid all butthe most urgent care. If financial insecurity leads to depression or alcoholabuse, unemployed workers can’t afford to seek professional help. Beingunemployed and uninsured can be a prescription for disaster.”

Christian Wolff, a composer of experimental classical music, says that his work is motivated by his desire “to turn the making of music into a collaborative and transforming activity (performer into composer into listener into composer into performer, etc.), the cooperative character of the activity to the exact source of the music. To stir up, through the production of the music, a sense of social conditions in which we live and of how these might be changed.”His music has been performed by avant-garde band Sonic Youth with collaborators such as Christian Marclay.Wolff will be hosting a master class after the performance at 3:30 p.m.

Losing a joboften means losing access to affordable health insurance — a double whammy inour present economy. These factors often contribute to physical and mentalhealth problems for the unemployed, especially when it takes months to find ajob.
Butnow individuals can learn about overlooked opportunities to protect theirhealth in a free workshop, Unemployed and Uninsured: Know Your Options, which will be held at the One Stop EmploymentCenter, 201 S. James St. (first floor), Peekskill. The workshop is free, butparticipants must be enrolled at a One Stop Employment Center to attend. Theworkshop sponsor is Hudson Health Plan, which provides free and low-cost healthinsurance in the Hudson Valley.
