Term Limits For Westchester County Officials 2007/12/22 15:07 Karma: 0
The recent debacle where the County Legislators tried to increase their salaries was outrageous. Up until recently, I always heard the County Legislators were considered a part-time position. But not they want to make a lifetime career with a top salary out of these positions. Are we getting better service out of these people. Heck, no! They're the same microphone-hogging, press release-spouting good-for-nothings that have always filled the legislature. And now they want more money.

I guess they take their lead from County Executive Andy Spano who has spent his entire administration (now on its third term) hogging the press, bankrolling his campaign coffers and making sure he'll get elected to yet another term. He's a bureaucrat from upper Westchester, not FDR for Christ's sake. Already now I am sure he's planning for his fourth term.

I am a Democrat, but since the advent of County Executive Andy Spano and the Democratic machine taking over both the executive and legislative branches, all I've seen is budgets get bigger, county departments get larger and salaries get higher. I'm getting pretty sick of it.

I am tired of these career politicians and think it's time Westchester residents start standing up for ourselves and start telling politicians it's time for them to take a hike.

I believe it's time for Term Limits in Westchester. A maximum of two four-year terms for the County Executive and the District Attorney and the County Clerk. And a maximum of four two-year terms for the County Legislators.

Enough with these politicians who build big campaign bank accounts so no one dares run against them. Enough with the Chairman of the Board of Legislators who thinks he should earn over $150,000 of our taxpayer dollars annually. Enough of Andy Spano who wants to be County Executive for life.

With term limits, we'll get newer, more humble, more responsive elected officials who got involved because they want to make a difference, not a pile of money while living the easy life on our tax dollars.

And don't let our existing politicians tell you they have years of valuable experience and shouldn't lose their jobs. It is true they may have experience in county issues and matters, but it hasn't prevented them from becoming too excessive in their comforts and unresponsive to the needs of their constituents. All we have are hollow leaders.

I say it's time to start throwing the bums out. Term Limits in Westchester. It's a a simple and effective way to give the politicians in charge a lesson in humility and to give residents new, fresher, and more responsive elected leaders in the future.
