Pre-school/Kindergarden question 2008/01/13 13:06 Karma: 0
Hello from North Carolina.

My family is most likely relocating to the greater NYC area soon as my husband is interviewing in Manhattan. I have a 4 year old boy, who turns 5 11/3 and I'm 14 weeks pregnant with my second child.

Two questions....

What is the birthday cut-off for Kindergarten? I need to know if my son will be eligible.

How do pre-schools work in this area? Here they are almost all in churches and enrollment is in Feb/March for the following school year.

Thank you in advance for any assistance you can provide. I'm trying to do what I can to make sure I have childcare this fall!

Hi there from France,
We are also moving to this area.
I'd love to know what the answer to this question is as we are moving to Westchester in June and I have a 3 1/2 year old and a 2 year old to get in to some kind of care so that I can start work in September.
Looking forward to any advice

Elissa

Hey there! and Good luck with move.

If you need full day help you have 2 options:

Day care facilities ( Big note here--- you MUST be there for pick up at 6 pm - or they call state welfare agancy and 3 calls may have you before the board. Remember this if your job will have you commuting on train. ) But they can be lovely places as long as your schedule fits.

or a nanny/au pair. Best to look at a service agency at first, --- they will do background checks, see driving records and train girls in CPR etc--- you can get agency names from a good realtor.

You did not mention if you work, or plan too. If you don't, I wouldn't even worry about it until you have time to check things out for yourself when you get here. Their are many preschools, but most preschoolers should not be in a daycare until 6pm. I would then suggest an au pair or nanny. Hopefully you are just asking for p/t time care. The kids need you!

Cut off date for kindergarten in our village (Scarsdale) is 12/31.
