Green Renovation Completed For YWCA Residence For Women
White Plains, NY - The YWCA White Plains & Central Westchester announced that a two-year, $25 million green renovation of its residence for low-income women has been successfully completed.
“The YWCA’s Residence for Women, which was completed within its multi-million budget and ahead of schedule, provides the region’s only permanent, affordable housing for low-income women,” said Maria Imperial, CEO of the YWCA White Plains & Central Westchester, Inc. “Our mission is to empower women and help them get on the path to self-sufficiency. They, in turn, become contributing members of society which benefits and strengthens our community.
“Residents can now enjoy a new energy-efficient facility, featuring sustainable materials, along with enhanced on-site case management, health and wellness programming, and other supportive services.”
According to Imperial, the $25 million green renovation project includes new roofs, terraces, and external masonry; the installation of energy efficient heating systems; new elevators that fully conform to guidelines set forth by the Americans with Disabilities Act, and reconfiguration of internal community and office spaces.
Funding for the renovation, a tax-credit project, came from various sources, including: the New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance; the Federal Home Loan Bank; the City of White Plains; Westchester County; the New York State Energy Research Development Authority, and the Enterprise Green Communities Grant. Jonathan Rose Companies managed the project’s design, financing, and construction with Stephen Tilly, Architect, and Lasberg Construction Associates handling project design and construction.
The YWCA’s Residence for Women provides social services relating to disabilities, medical illness, a history of being battered, and substance abuse. Through the case management and supportive services at the YWCA, women are reunited with family and connected with doctors, social service agencies, and education resources. The YWCA also provides employment counseling, referral services to job training programs in the community, assistance with resume writing, and preparing for interviews.
The YWCA is currently accepting applications for available units at the Residence, which is open to single women, aged 18 or above, who earn no more than 50% of the area’s median annual income ($37,800). Residents pay $499 per month for their furnished room, have access to a kitchen, and can participate in the YWCA’s numerous cultural, social, educational activities, and services. They also benefit from the YWCA’s collaborations with local organizations, such as Dress for Success, White Plains Hospital, the Cornell Cooperative Extension, AIDs Related Community Services, Community Capital Resources, and Green Thumb.
