Mt. Vernon Roundabout Receives Public Works Award

Westchester Government NewsMt. Vernon, NY - The Mount Vernon Roundabout has received the second place award in the 20th Annual NYCOM Empire State Report Local Government Achievement Awards state-wide competition.

The Award will be presented to Mayor Ernest D. Davis of Mount Vernon on Tuesday June 12th at the New York State Conference of Mayors Annual Meeting in Saratoga Springs New York. The Roundabout will also be featured in the August edition of the Empire State Report and the July-August issue of NYCOM’s Municipal Bulletin. Mount Vernon will also receive a letter of recognition from the National League of Cities, and be featured on the Best Practices section of the NYCOM website.

The roundabout is a modern version of a traffic circle or rotary. This multi-faceted project involved the restoration of an unsightly intersection at the heart of the city to its original prominence as an historic landmark and the construction of a European style Roundabout with a memorial to veterans of the Spanish American War as its centerpiece. The veterans’ memorial is surrounded by a large pool with computer controlled choreographed fountains, lights and music. Roundabouts have proven to significantly reduce traffic accidents, traffic congestion and pollution.

“This is a wonderful award for the city to receive and in particular for our many employees who worked so hard to make this project a reality” commented Mayor Ernest D. Davis. “To be the recipient of an award in the public works category with so many worthy projects in a state the size of New York, is an amazing accomplishment and honor”.
