White Plains, NY - The White Plains Family YMCA is offering more than 100 hours a week of adult swimming-pool time in response to increased demand and to better serve people who wish to swim before and after work.
Adult swim time now is available from 5:30 a.m. until 10 p.m. Monday through Friday, 7 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday and 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday. The White Plains YMCA, located at 250 Mamaroneck Avenue in downtown White Plains, has two indoor pools, which means adult pool time is available throughout the day, even when classes and Riptides swim team practices are taking place. The White Plains Family YMCA’s provision of more than 100 hours of adult swim time a week is believed to be the most offered by any public pool in Westchester County.
For a limited time, adults and families considering using the White Plains YMCA’s pools and who make an appointment for a tour will receive a free, one-week pass to use the pools and meet members. To make a reservation to tour the facility and receive a one-week pass, call (914) 949-8030.
“Swimming always has been one of the most popular activities we offer, and we’ve experienced a surge in interest since the Boys & Girls Club of Northern Westchester announced that adults no longer can use its pools,” said Helene Mogridge, director of the White Plains Family YMCA.
“Many of the adults who used the Boys & Girls Club’s pool in Mount Kisco in the past have started swimming at our White Plains pool, which is one of the most convenient and affordable alternatives for people in the Mount Kisco area,” said Mogridge. “Swimming is a great way to exercise and make friends, and we hope that our flexible hours will encourage more people to come out and use our pools.”
Adult lap time is just one of the swimming programs offered by the YMCA, which also has family pool hours, youth and adult swim teams, private and group swimming lessons and SCUBA classes. Among the YMCA’s popular aquatics programs are:
* Family swim time Monday, Wednesday and Friday evenings and weekend afternoons.
* Swimming teams for children aged 5 to 18. Introductory teams meet Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Children competing at the state level practice Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.
* Masters Swimming for people 18 and older. The White Plains YMCA’s Masters Swimming team, which competes against other groups in the area, holds coach-led practices Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights at 7 p.m.
* SCUBA classes for people 12 and older leading to full certification are Mondays and Fridays at 8 p.m.
* Swimming lessons for people 5-years-old and older.
* Therapeutic swims in a pool with warm water.
Reflecting the YMCA’s commitment to safety, certified lifeguards are on duty whenever the pools are in use.
Swimming programs such as adult and family swims are included in basic YMCA membership, while other activities such as group and private swimming lessons, the youth and Masters swim teams and SCUBA classes have additional fees. See www.ymca-cnw.org/content_whiteplains.htm for more information.
In addition to its aquatics programs, the White Plains YMCA has a well-equipped weight and exercise room, gymnasium, dance studio, squash, racquetball and handball courts, indoor track, steam room and sauna. A wide variety of classes and personal training assistance is available. Public parking is a short walk away.
