White Plains, NY - The Human Rights Torch Relay (HRTR) will arrive in White Plains on Saturday, May 3, 2008.
The HRTR is a global grassroots effort to raise awareness of the Chinese communist regime's human rights crimes prior to the 2008 Beijing Olympics. The HRTR strongly condemns the Chinese regime's ruthless crackdown in Tibet; the underwriting of genocide in Darfur; the ongoing persecution of Falun Gong and arrest of nearly 2000 followers since January 1st 2008; support of corrupt regimes in Myanmar, N. Korea and Zimbabwe; and persecution of Christians, lawyers, reporters and all who have effectively become "prisoners of the Olympics" as a consequence of China's pre-Olympics whitewash.
The HRTR will eventually span 6 continents and an estimated 40 countries and 150 cities—including over 40 U.S. cities—to raise awareness of these issues. HRTR is the only torch relay providing a platform for all groups to voice their concerns about the Chinese regime's human rights crimes.
White Plains Event:
A symbolic torch lighting ceremony will take place at The Garden of Remembrance, followed by a 4-mile run to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. statue at the Westchester County Courthouse plaza where the rally will be held. A welcoming ceremony at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. statue will begin upon the runners’ arrival (anticipated to be around 11:00am).
