White Plains, NY - On November 14, Wally Backman, 1986 World Champion New York Mets second baseman, will be honored with a special award of merit for his years of mustache dedication at the Music Conservatory of Westchester.
That evening Mamaroneck resident Jon Chattman, co-author of the recently released humor book, SWEET ’STACHE: 50 Badass Mustaches and the Faces Who Sport Them, will present the ballplayer with the honor at an event dubbed “Westchester County’s First Annual ’Stache-Off.”
Open to all mustaches of Westchester, the ’Stache-Off will feature local men competing for “best in ‘stache” prizes from The New York Knicks, Sam Ash, Jan Mar Trophy, Equinox Fitness, Movember.com, TheCheapPop.com, and many more. A SWEET ’STACHE book signing and performances from Conservatory faculty and students, including Port-Chester composer Marco Valentino Quartero, NYC’s Barbara Podgurski, Rye’s Irena Portenko, and NYC’s Nakia Verner, will precede the countywide mustache contest. Yonkers musician Gary Chattman and Scarsdale cellist Dave Nodiff will also perform. The Peak’s party van will be onsite and guests also have a chance to win a Rock Band 2 Console for Xbox in a $5 raffle.
Partial proceeds from the mustache contest and variety show, held at 7 p.m., will benefit the Conservatory’s scholarships and tuition assistance.
“It’s been far too long since variety shows have been put on, and I’m very excited to bring my love of mustaches and music – specifically the Music Conservatory of Westchester – together for an exciting night in White Plains,” noted Chattman. “When you think about it – it all makes perfect sense since mustaches are essentially music to a man’s face.”
Chattman added, “I’m also very excited to honor Backman, whose mustache has long been wrongly overshadowed by former teammate Keith Hernandez’s pushbroom power for far too long.”
Sara Benincasa, comedienne and SiriusXM talk show host, will serve as ‘Stache-Off Emcee. “This is surely going to be the greatest mustache competition in the history of mustache competitions. It's actually going to be the greatest thing in the world, ever,” said Benincasa. “I am humbled and honored by the opportunity to host an event that judges the follicular accomplishments of the men of Westchester County.”
Guest judges include Greenburgh Town Supervisor Paul Feiner, News 12 anchor/reporter Tara Rosenblum, Opie and Anthony’s “Primetime” Sam Roberts, Hard Drugs lead singer Jeff Lee, film critic Marshall Fine, and co-authors of “The Hookup Handbook,” Jessica Rozler and Andrea Lavinthal.
Admission is $12 ($15 at the door) or $20 with a signed copy of the book. Registration for the ’Stache Off contest is free. Nearby Tuscany Cafe will provide locally-roasted coffee and refreshments. Trophies were generously donated by Jan Mar Trophy in New Rochelle.
Led by a foreword from former mustachioed icon John Oates (of Hall & Oates) and illustrations from porkchop-sideburned artist Brett Underhill, SWEET ’STACHE features ’stache-analysis for forty-nine men and one woman (we can forget Frida Kahlo?) who made the cut of top pushbrooms. Complete with ’stache trivia and celebrity insight from the likes of Paul Rudd, Michael Cera, and Artie Lange, the book was profiled recently by the National Enquirer, USA Today, TVGuide.com, among others, and is a reader’s guide to getting in on the mustache action. Chattman is currently up for the American Mustache Institute’s American Mustache of the Year Award for his hairy work.
