White Plains, NY - Statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) say that more than one third of adults age 65 years and older fall each year.
Falls are the leading cause of injury-related deaths among older adults, and 20-30% of these falls result in moderate to severe injuries ranging from bruising to fractures to traumatic brain injury. In 2000, costs for fall-related injuries exceeded $19 billion, and are projected to reach $54.9 billion by 2020.
Of no less concern is the fact that older adults have limited independence after recovering, either due to their injuries or their fear of falling again.
Healthcare professional recommend the following tips on how to reduce the risk of falling:
· Stand for a few seconds before walking.
· Wear supportive footwear that fits well.
· Ask your doctor or pharmacist to review your medicines - both prescription and over-the-counter - to reduce side effects and interactions.
· Have eyes checked at least once per year.
· Improve household lighting.
· Remove hazards in your home that can lead to falls, such as throw rugs or loose tiles.
· Install grab bars around the shower, tub and toilet.
· Get help to complete chores that require climbing.
· Exercise regularly; exercise programs that increase strength and improve balance are especially good.
While women comprise 58% of older adults, medical costs for their fall-related injuries were two to three times higher than for men. A study out of Philadelphia’s School of Podiatric Medicine at Temple Medical School last year found that senior women showed significant improvements in gait and posture after 2 months of gentle yoga exercise. The program led to greater leg flexibility, strength and a faster stride, resulting in fewer falls.
Gentle yoga teaches participants proper ways to breathe, stand and pose, enabling them to maintain their mobility and independence in several ways. Even the most basic yoga poses and breathing exercises can improve the stability and balance of women aged over 65.
Gentle Yoga with Sandra offers group and private instruction at senior centers and residential care communities. Sessions range from 30- to 60-minutes, and all positions are done while seated in a chair or standing, thereby being non-strenuous.
