Westchester Senior NewsWhite Plains, NY - Legal experts will give free advice on topics ranging from elder law to power of attorney documents and wills vs. trusts at the ninth annual Senior Law Day on Oct. 16 at the Westchester County Center in White Plains.

The program will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and is open to seniors, adult children, caregivers and professionals who work with mature adults.  The 14 workshops will be led by elder law attorneys, certified financial planners and professionals from agencies that serve seniors and their families.

There will be two new workshops this year:  “Challenges of Post-Hospitalization:  Making a home run or safely sliding into short-term rehab” and “Managing Your Investments in Periods of Wide Stock Market Fluctuations:  Keeping an even keel.”  In addition, there will be workshops for Spanish-speaking seniors on choosing Medicare options and prescription drug plans.

Senior Law Day is sponsored by the Westchester County Department of Senior Programs and Services (DSPS) and the Westchester Public/Private Partnership for Aging Services.  The Ninth Judicial District of the New York State Office of Court Administration (Justice Initiatives of the Gender Fairness Committee of the 9th Judicial District) is also among the sponsors.

From noon to 1 p.m., lawyers and certified financial planners will offer free 15-minute consultations.  Eight people can sign up to speak with an attorney; eight with a CFP on a first-come, first-served basis.

DSPS Commissioner Mae Carpenter said Senior Law Day is among the most popular events the department offers.

“The program is now in its ninth year, which means we’ve helped more than 2,300 seniors learn about their rights since Senior Law Day began,” Carpenter said. “This program is not to be missed.  Seniors need to know their rights.”

The day will also include workshops on topics such as estate planning, elder law, housing options, Medicare and Medicare Advantage programs and housing.  A workshop on Senior Crime Busters, a proactive elder fraud and crime prevention program the county created earlier this year, will also be offered.

There will be a free breakfast and limited free parking. Registration is required for this entire event by Oct. 6.  Call (914) 813-6400 to sign up.

Among other sponsors are the Westchester Women’s Bar Association; Keane and Beane, P.C.; Goldfarb, Abrandt, Salzman & Kutzin, LLP; Anthony DeVito, PhD. CFP, NAPFA; the Financial Planning Association of Greater Hudson; Walsh & Amicucci, LLP and Littman Krooks LLP. Assistance was provided by the Elder Law Section of the New York State Bar Association.
