White Plains, NY - Every child should be able to return to school this fall with new notebooks, pencils and other supplies to get a good start on the new year. But for many grandparents who are raising their grandchildren it can be hard to find the money to pay for these items.
As a result, this time of year often finds the 4,739 grandparents in Westchester who have sole responsibility for raising their grandchildren skimping on their own personal and medical needs.
Their situation is especially difficult because they receive little or no subsidies for their grandchildren, and often have left retirement and returned to work to provide for them. Some grandparents hold down two jobs to meet their expenses.
That is why the Grandparents Coalition of Westchester County’s Department of Senior Programs and Services is appealing for tax-deductible donations. The funds they raise will enable those grandparents to buy the tools their grandchildren need to learn.
Contributions should be sent to the nonprofit Public/Private Partnership for Aging Services, 9 S. First Ave., 10th floor, Mount Vernon, New York 10550-3414, Attn: Corina De León. Donations of at least $20 are requested, but any amount would be appreciated.
The coalition will acknowledge the generosity of contributors who wish to donate in honor of a child, grandchild, to mark the celebration of a birthday or anniversary or in memory of someone special.
