White Plains, NY - Are you looking to find a career – or, perhaps, change the one you’re in now? If so, you can learn about the many and varied opportunities in the field of aging – the so-called “silver industries” – at a career fair on Oct. 25 at Pace University’s campus in Pleasantville, 861 Bedford Road.
“Where Are the Jobs? Where’s the Money?: Strictly Business in the Age of Aging” is the title of the free program, which will be held at Pace’s Kessel Campus Center from 9:30 a.m. to noon. The event is open to the public.
The career fair will have workshops featuring professionals in the rapidly growing field of aging. The field offers positions in areas such as public policy, social work, nursing, architecture, medicine, health care, elder law, marketing, management, adult education, physical therapy and communications.
The professionals will also be available to chat with participants but there will not be any job interviews.
Commissioner Mae Carpenter of Westchester County’s Department of Senior Programs and Services (DSPS), a sponsor of the fair, said it could be an eye-opening experience for people to learn about the wide range of careers the aging industry offers.
“There are many good and well paying jobs in the field and they provide fulfilling careers,” said Carpenter, who will deliver the opening remarks. “The population is aging rapidly so there will be more and more need for experienced workers as time goes on. The silver industries are great for seniors to consider and offer terrific opportunities for adults searching for a second or third career.”
Figures from the Association of Gerontology in Higher Education indicate that after several years in the field physical therapists can earn an annual average salary of $53,000; counselors, $42,000. Annual salaries for nurses can run from $55,000 to $85,000 while dietitians can earn $49,000 to $57,000.
Workshops will be on “Entrepreneurship – Be Enterprising: Your Career/Your Terms,” “Health and Wellness in the World of the ‘Very Mature’ “and “Technology - A Growing Market in Aging Services.”
Speakers will include Carol Greenberg, president of Concept: Care, a home health-care service in White Plains and Robert Cole of Cole Communications, a public relations firm in Bronxville.
Also speaking will be Barbara Thomas, a registered nurse from Westchester Community College (WCC) and Sue Lobel, a gerontologist from Classic Residences by Hyatt assisted-living facilities.
In addition to DSPS, career day sponsors are the Westchester Alliance of Academic Institutions for Aging Related Studies and Workforce Development, the Westchester Public/Private Partnership for Aging Services, WCC and Pace.
Registration is requested by calling WCC’s Continuing Education Department at (914) 606-6793 or by sending send an e-mail to
