Valhalla, NY - Ten Westchester Community College (WCC) students participated in the prestigious Beacon Conference at Bergen Community College this month. Beacon is a one-day conference and competition for students at two-year colleges in the Middle Atlantic States.
The top papers from each participating college are presented and judged at the annual conference. Students submit in various subject-area categories and these papers are then read by panels comprised of community college professors with expertise in specific academic fields. Authors of the top three papers in each category are invited to present their work at the conference.
On the day of the conference, each panel is assigned a separate judge from a four-year college or university, who chooses the "most outstanding presenter" in this particular category. The winning papers are published in the conference proceedings, and their authors and their mentors receive $100 each.
This year, four of our students were recognized as the "most outstanding presenters" in their respective academic fields.
2008 Beacon Scholars were:
Jonnah Mariano (YONKERS).
Emma Francis-Snyder (HASTINGS-ON-HUDSON).
