Valhalla, NY - Con Edison has awarded a $50,000 grant ($25,000 per year for the next two years) to Westchester Community College’s (WCC) Gateway Center, currently under construction and scheduled to open in 2010.
“We believe that the Gateway Center will be an important resource and will have a tremendous impact on the future of the entire county,” says Westchester Community College President Joseph Hankin. “In donating this money, Con Edison is supporting our need to add essential space to our main campus in Valhalla and also helping to enable us to add new services and expand existing educational opportunities.”
The Gateway Center will house the college’s Business and Language programs, including the English Language Institute. The grant will help establish a Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) laboratory to teach English Language Learning. Funds will be used to equip the lab with computer work stations that will allow students to access specialized technology stations to practice their language skills both within traditional classes and during self-paced individual study.
The grant reflects Con Edison’s active interest in building a skilled local workforce. In the future, the company looks forward to hiring trained college graduates as a result of The Gateway Center.
“We are excited to support this worthwhile project which will train a future generation of workers for job opportunities and meaningful careers by developing a well-educated, well-trained workforce,” says Sandra Miller, Director of Public Affairs, Con Edison.
