Westchester School & Education NewsMt. Vernon, NY - The Board of Education is working on solutions on how to reinstate the Interscholastic Sports programs to the Mount Vernon City School District.

Working with community groups, the Mayor’s office and the Mount Vernon Educational Foundation Inc., the board is hopeful the students of Mount Vernon will have a sports program.

“The Board of Education placed the academic needs of the students first, and eliminating interscholastic sports was a tough decision,” said Board President Charles Stern. “However, we are sensitive to the implications of this choice.  We are working closely with the Mayor and the City of Mount Vernon, charitable contributors and the Mount Vernon Education Foundation, and it is our hope that by way of those efforts there will be sports in Mount Vernon.”

The board has a liaison on T.E.A.M (Together Everyone Achieves Miracles)
Mount Vernon, a coalition of coaches, school district personnel, elected officials, parents, and community members working to raise funds. The foundation will serve as the charity designated by the district to receive donations

Trustee Derrick Claye, whose own children participate in interscholastic sports, will represent the board on the cross-city group, which includes Mayor Clinton Young’s Save Our Sports initiative and other entities. The school district’s representative to T.E.A.M is Deputy Superintendent Maureen Gonzalez. Superintendent W.L. “Tony” Sawyer will also be providing weekly updates on WVOX 1460 AM.

The Board will also be addressing the state and federal funding levels that pit children against property owners. Trustee Elias Gootzeit, the board’s legislative liaison, will be calling for a legislative summit to address this educational inequity and voice the board’s opposition to state legislature's proposed property tax cap.

PTA Council President Debra Stern, along with Donna Pirro, Ronnie Cox and Elizabeth Spiro will also host a fundraising event for major contributors on July 27.

All contributions are to be mailed to the foundation at: Mount Vernon Educational Foundation, P.O. Box 476, Fleetwood Station, Mount Vernon, NY 10552.
