Westchester School & Education NewsDobbs Ferry, NY - The Commission on Independent Colleges and Universities (CICU) announced that Dr. Kimberly R. Cline, president of Mercy College, has been named to its 2009-2010 board of trustees.

CICU represents the chief executives of New York's more than 100 independent (private, not-for-profit) colleges and universities on issues of public policy. It is the formal organizational liaison with the New York State Board of Regents, the State Commissioner of Education, and the chancellors of the State University (SUNY) and City University (CUNY), and with the proprietary sector.

“It is a great honor to serve on the board of an organization that plays such an important role in advancing higher education public policy, both at the state and federal level,” says Dr. Cline. “I look forward to working to develop consensus among membership and further CICU initiatives.”

Prior to assuming the presidency of Mercy College in July 2008, Dr. Cline served as vice chancellor and chief financial officer of the State University of New York (SUNY), where she had been responsible for all financial and administrative functions and oversaw SUNY's $10 billion budget, which supports 64 campuses throughout the state. She was also a member of the executive board of SUNY's faculty senate. Previously she served SUNY at Maritime College as vice president, chief operating officer, and chief of staff, where she was instrumental in doubling enrollment and balancing a 20 percent deficit spending budget.

“Through her leadership experience in both private and public sectors, President Cline brings a balanced and broad perspective on higher education issues to the CICU board of trustees. She will be an asset for our board and sector during her term of service. We greatly appreciate President Cline’s commitment to our collective cause and the advancement of more than 460,000 students served by New York’s 110+ private, not-for-profit colleges and universities statewide,” said Abraham Lackman, president of the Commission on Independent Colleges and Universities.

CICU member colleges compose the largest private sector of higher education in the world and confer most of the bachelor's degrees (56%), master's degrees (72%), and doctoral and first-professional degrees (80%) earned in New York State. CICU member campuses enroll more than 460,000 students, including nearly 300,000 New York State residents.

CICU board represents executive-level participation from colleges and universities in every region of New York State, and highlights the diversity of institution type and size within the independent sector.
