Iona College Presents Jubilee Awards

Westchester School & Education NewsNew Rochelle, NY - Iona College presented Jubilee Awards to 10 alumni over its recent Reunion Weekend, which took place June 5-7, 2009.

The awards are presented annually to alumni who exhibit a commitment to the College even after they graduate and who have made an impact on their greater professional communities. 

The Brother William B. Cornelia Founders Award for Outstanding Service to Iona College was presented to Monica L. ’70 and John J Judge ’71 of Milford, CT.  Monica and John are both members of the President’s Club, the Gingko Society, and the Goal Club. Monica is President of the Goal Club, as well as Vice President of the Alumni Board, chairperson for Reunion Weekend, and serves on the Winter Auction Committee. John is Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of the Safilo Group Companies in the Americas, while Monica donates her time as their parish’s Secretary, in addition to other volunteer work.

The Brother Patrick B. Doyle Award for Distinguished Service to the Alumni Association was presented posthumously to Kevin L. Bass ’77. Kevin was an Iona student-athlete and scored 1,729 points for the Gaels basketball team. He was raised in Elmsford, NY, and after attending Iona, became a well-respected IBM employee, winning accolades for sales performance. He was also active in his community, volunteering his time as a coach, serving on community boards and assisting local youth with gaining access to college. Kevin passed away suddenly in 2008.

The Brother John G. Driscoll Award for Heroic Humanitarian Service was presented to Barbara Netter ‘79 MA, of Greenwich, CT. Barbara is a co-founder of Alliance for Cancer Gene Therapy (ACGT) as well as chairman of ACGT’s Special Events.  Barbara is a practicing therapist in New York and Connecticut.

The Brother Arthur A. Loftus Award for Outstanding Achievement was presented to six recipients:
Antonio Broccoli Porto ’78 is an international artist, painter, sculptor, and costume and set designer. He studied fine arts at Iona, and continued his education at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Milan, Italy. Antonio was a member of The Association of Watercolorists of Puerto Rico for more than eight years and then served as vice president of that organization. Antonio currently resides in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico.

Philip G. D’Ambrosio ’89 is a Senior Vice President of Cablevision where he plays a key role in structuring Cablevision transactions and advising the company on its products, services and strategic initiatives. Philip graduated summa cum laude from Iona. He currently lives in Purchase, NY.

Ralph G. D’Ambrosio ’89 is Vice President and CFO of L-3 Communications, where he is responsible for all aspects of the corporation’s financial operations, strategies and processes. He graduated Iona Summa Cum Laude with a bachelor of Business Administration. Ralph lives in Lloyd Harbor, NY.

Anthony M. Di Iorio ’65 graduated from Iona with a BBA in accounting, and began his professional career in the New York office of Peat, Marwick, Mitchell & Co. After his time in accounting he moved into the financial services industry, and ultimately became controller of the global firm. He now resides in London and Hilton Head Island, SC.

Laurence M. Downes ’79, ‘81MBA is chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of New Jersey Resources (NJR) and its principal subsidiary, New Jersey Natural Gas (NJNG). He is a director and former chairman of the American Gas Association and the Natural Gas Council, and a trustee of the American Gas Foundation. He earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration and a master’s degree in business administration from Iona. Laurence now lives with his family in Princeton Junction, NJ.  

Rita C. Mabli ’74, ’76 MBA is President and CEO of the United Hebrew Geriatric Center (UHGC). Rita graduated Summa Cum Laude from Iona College with a BA in communications and an MBA in organizational behavior. She currently lives in New Rochelle, NY. 

Founded in 1940 by the Congregation of Edmund Rice Christian Brothers, Iona College is a private, coeducational institution of learning in the tradition of American Catholic higher education.  Iona, currently listed in the US News and World Report’s annual “America’s Best Colleges 2008” and The Princeton Review’s Best Northeastern Colleges 2008 edition, offers undergraduate degrees in liberal arts, science, and business administration, as well as Master of Arts, Master of Science and master of business administration degrees and numerous post-graduate certificate programs.
