White Plains, NY - A Domestic Violence Awareness Mural, created by White Plains High School National Art Honor Society students, was recently unveiled at the school.
Margaret’s Place, a partnership of The Joe Torre Safe At Home Foundation and Westchester Jewish Community Services (WJCS) sponsored the creation of the brightly colored, 10 ft. X 5 ft. mural. Ali Torre, wife of former Yankee Manager Joe Torre, was on hand for the event.
Begun last October -- Domestic Violence Awareness Month -- the mural was created by 12 students working with WPHS Art Teacher Mary Fennell and Artist Jill Parry of the Westchester Arts Council. The intention is to spread domestic violence awareness while positively enhancing school climate. Prior to starting the mural, the students received an overview about domestic violence from Vicki-Lynn Hertlein, MSW, WJCS Margaret's Place Coordinator.
Named after Joe Torre’s mother, Margaret’s Place provides students with a safe room – a non-threatening environment where they can meet with a professional counselor trained in domestic violence intervention and prevention. The Torre Foundation in partnership with WJCS also sponsors Margaret’s Place safe rooms at Pelham Middle School, Emerson Middle School in Yonkers and the Louis M. Klein Middle School in Harrison.
