Westchester School & Education NewsWhite Plains, NY - With the high cost of college, two out of every three college students will need some type of financial aid to pay for school. And while a student loan can be the first step in establishing credit, students and parents need to be aware of what they are getting into before they sign on the dotted line.

To help parents and students through this maze of choices, On April 14 from 7-9 p.m., Westchester County and the New York State Attorney General’s Office will hold a conference on financing a college education.  This free program will be held at the Westchester County Center 198 Central Park Ave. in White Plains.

“We urge college-bound students and their families to attend this program,’’ said County Executive Andy Spano. “Choosing the right student loan is important because it can affect your financial standing for years to come.’’

The keynote speaker will be Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, who has been outspoken on the issue of deceptive practices related to college loans. Also attending will be a panel of experts who will provide information on financial aid, college loans, financing strategies, and how to be a good consumer when choosing a loan.

On the event panel are:
Heather McDonnell (moderator) – Director of Financial Aid, Sarah Lawrence College
Sabrina Lerman – Financial Aid counselor, Westchester Community College
Benjamin Lawsky – Deputy Counselor and Special Assistant to the NYS Attorney General
Chuck Bell – Programs director, Consumer Union
Gary Brown – Director, Westchester County Department of Consumer Protection

The event is free, but advance pre-registration is required. To pre-register, visit www.westchestergov.com or call 995-2913.
