Chappaqua, NY - The Children’s Environmental Literacy Foundation (CELF) is holding its third annual Students for a Sustainable Future EXPO on April 30 at Pace University’s Goldstein Gym, Pleasantville, NY campus.
Students and other participants in this fast-growing event are urged to bring Styrofoam to the Expo. “Unfortunately this material usually ends up in landfills all over the country,” said CELF founder Katie Ginsberg. “This is a revolutionary use and will instead help the environment.” It will be transported by Westchester County’s Department of Environmental Facilities to Hitsman Farm in Dutchess County, NY where it will be used to create ultra light-weight “soil” for green roofs by The Gaia Institute. The EXPO features over 50 exhibits from numerous industries, government agencies, organizations, and school districts. Over 1,400 students, teachers and community members are expected to participate. The program was created to introduce students to the concept of sustainable development through innovative products, programs and practices. The EXPO goal is to inspire and cultivate them to become future leaders who understand and can manage the consequences of our interaction with natural systems, regardless of the profession they choose. Sustainability has fast become a goal for many companies, creating vast new opportunities for today’s students.
EXPO '08 corporate sponsors include Aveda, Con Edison, Printing Responsibly, Steelcase Inc., Waldner's Business Environments and Whole Foods Market. Steelcase will feature an innovative booth on product lifecycle, showcasing Cradle-to-Cradle design concepts instilled in their products.
Schools: Middle and high school student groups from schools throughout the Lower Hudson Valley will be participating during the school day, while additional groups of all ages will be attending after school. Students will present exhibits of their own design on a wide range of topics related to sustainable development; including creating edible gardens, zero waste environments, calculating their school’s ecological footprint and research into biodiversity. Corporate Exhibitors: The EXPO draws a diverse group of corporate, government and non-government entities.
These organizations spotlight subjects such as renewable energy, green building design and construction, organic and fair trade agriculture, habitat protection, environmental consulting, and sustainability education. In addition to the sponsors’ booths, exhibitors include the US Green Building Council, the Rainforest Alliance, Mercury Solar, PowerSmiths, Heliotronics, Citi Smith Barney, Stone Barns Center for Food and Agriculture, Jacob Burns Film Center, Grassroots Environmental Education, and many more. A list of 2008 exhibitors and participants can be found on the CELF website at: www.celfoundation.org/expo08/.
