Larchmont, NY - Students from Hommocks Middle School recently enjoyed a unique visitor: a wolf. Students met Atka, a gray wolf from the Wolf Conservation Center (WCC), located in South Salem, NY, and participated in an interactive slide show presentation.
The visits were made possible by a donation from Kristina Feighan, president of Northeast Environmental Inc., a leader in the underground storage tank and environmental service industry. Feighan has always been passionate about the preservation of the environment and decided to commemorate her 10th year of business in Mamaroneck by providing a learning opportunity for youth during Earth Month.
Feighan said she was impressed by the impact that the program had on the students. “I was thrilled to see how eager and involved the students were throughout the entire presentation. Wolves play such a vital role in our ecosystem and it was great to have a platform to teach children about this.”
The WCC promotes wolf conservation by teaching about wolves, their relationship to the environment, and the human role in protecting their future. They operate as the preeminent facility in the eastern United States for the captive breeding and pre-release of endangered wolf species.
WCC Managing Director Maggie Howell said Northeast Environmental’s contribution enabled the WCC to bring its environmental education programs to over 1,000 Westchester County children.
“Our programs emphasize the importance of caring for the earth and nature,” said Maggie Howell. “We truly appreciate Northeast Environmental's support of our mission and commitment to a cleaner, safer, better place to live and grow.”
Larry Keane, assistant principal at Hommocks Middle School said he was excited about the learning experience that the wolf visit provided for his students. “The presentation fit well into the science curriculum,” said Erica Metkiff, science teacher at Hommocks Middle School.
“Throughout the year, we have tried to instill in our students a sense of environmental stewardship as we have been raising trout in our classrooms. This presentation reinforced the connection between humans and the environment, as well as stressed the importance of helping protect local wildlife and their habitat.”
