Yonkers Hydrant Flushing Alert
Posted by Westchester.com
Thursday, 18 June 2009

Westchester Health NewsYonkers, NY - The following is an Official Public Notice issued by the City of Yonkers Water Bureau regarding the flushing of city fire hydrants in order to improve water quality and flow.

To improve the quality of its water distribution system, the Yonkers Water Bureau will perform hydrant flushing today, Monday, June 15, between 9:00am and 4:30pm. The areas affected today are as follows:

North West Yonkers: Amackassin and Morsemere Terrace, Eastview, and Tower Place

North Central Yonkers: Shelley, Pocono and Fenimore Avenues, Albemarle Place and Marlborough Road

This flushing is part of a regular maintenance schedule for the city's water system and is conducted to improve water quality through high volume circulation.

Residents located in these areas may experience discolored water during the flushing period due to high iron content in the water. Though it may be discolored, this water is not harmful for consumption. Continued laboratory testing has consistently shown that it does not contain harmful bacteria.

However, discolored water will stain laundry. Accordingly, residents in those affected areas should not wash clothes during the daytime hours of this flushing period.

Residents may inquire whether their area will be affected, on a particular day, by calling the Yonkers Water Bureau at (914) 377-6765.

Sure, it may not contain harmful bacteria but there are harmful substances that can exist in water other than bacteria, such as minerals, oils, etc. Can we say lead content, anyone? Mercury? Hellooo.....
