May is Wellness Through Prevention Month at White Plains Hospital Center

White Plains Hospital Center will sponsor a community-wide “Wellness Through Prevention Month” in May, featuring a full calendar of seminars, health screenings and fitness demonstrations.  Detailed information on each program is on the Hospital web site, www.wphospital.org. Wellness Month Featured Speakers
Modern Prevention: How to Collaborate with your Doctor
Isadore Rosenfeld, MD will discuss how to make the most of your relationship with your personal physician and collaborate with him or her to assure your best health. Rosenfel is the Ida and Theo Rossi Distinguished professor of Clinical Medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College and an attending cardiologist at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital. Dr. Rosenfeld is also medical consultant for the FOX News Channel and host of the weekly show Housecall. This educational lecture will be held at The Residences at The Ritz-Carlton, Westchester, Tower II on May 14th at 7:00pm. Admissions is free but registration is required. Obesity and Weight Loss Forum moderated by Max Gomez
Award –winning broadcast journalist and health and medical reporter, Dr. Max Gomez will moderate a multidisciplinary panel of WPHC physicians and experts discussing healthy weight loss and how to reduce the risk of life-threatening diseases related to obesity. The forum will be held at The Residences at The Ritz-Carlton, Westchester, Tower II on May 28th at 6:00pm. Admissions is free but registration is required. Lunch and Lecture with Nutritionist Joy Bauer
Joy Bauer, MS, RD, CDN, will discuss ways to optimize health through nutrition as well as her latest book, New York Times bestseller Joy’s LIFE Diet: Four Steps to Thin Forever. The lunch and lecture will be held at Doral Arrowwood on May 29th at 11:30am. Admissions is $75 per person and pre-registration is required. SPECIAL EVENTS
Mayfair Fundraiser at Rye Playland
Bring the family to a fun-filled day at historic Playland on Saturday, May 2, 2009 from 10:00am-6:00pm (RAINDATE: May 3, from Noon-6:00pm). Enjoy more than 50 major and Kiddyland rides and attractions while supporting the missions of three local hospitals (Sound Shore Medical Center, Westchester Medical Center, and White Plains Hospital Center).  Mayfair will also feature giveaways and raffles, free health activities and screenings, ambulance tours, local craft vendors, a bake sale, and more! Kids will have the chance to meet Dr. Ted E. Bear and Corey the Robot. Beautiful Hand-Made Knits on Sale
Hand-made hats, scarves, mittens, sweaters, afghans, baby blankets, pet sweaters and more will be on sale in the Hospital lobby on May 12th and 19th from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.  All items are created by the Knitwits, the Hospital’s talented volunteer knitting group, and proceeds from the sales will benefit the Hospital.  For more information, call 914-681-1225.

BLOOD DRIVES
Blood Donor Center
The Blood Donor Center is open every weekday 8:45 am – 4:00 pm.  Saturday hours are available.  Donors must be 17 – 75 years of age, in good health and weight at least 110 lbs.  Appointments are recommended. Call 914-681-1056.

FREE SCREENINGS
Blood Pressure Screening
Sponsored by the Auxiliary of WPHC, a free blood pressure screening is available every third Wednesday of the month, March 18, from 1:00 – 4:00 pm, in the Hospital Lobby. For further information, call 914-681-1225.

Health Check
A free screening program, sponsored by WPHC Home Care, makes nurses available to answer health questions and perform free blood pressure and blood sugar testing.  Screenings will take place at:

Community Room, 76 South Lexington Ave, White Plains, May 6th, 1:00 – 2:30 pm
167-169 Terrace Avenue, Port Chester, May 13, 11:00 am- 12:30 pm.

SUPPORT GROUPS
Adolescent Girls Group
A weekly group for teenage girls that addresses such topics as body image, self-esteem, relationship issues and planning for the future. Classes meet Monday evenings. May be covered by insurance. Call Megan Seltz, Ph.D., at 914-681-2805 for more information.

Bereavement Support Groups

Caregiver Resource & Support Group
This program, sponsored by the WPHC Department of Senior Services, provides information and support to individuals caring for older adults.  A geriatric professional facilitates the group which meets on the last Wednesday of the month, May 27th, from 6:00 -7:30 pm, at 69 East Post Road. Heart Club- May’s Topic: Coronary Angioplasty: Shopping for Stents?
The Heart Club meets on the first Tuesday of the month, May 5th at 7:00 pm in Jazzman’s Café. The Heart Club provides educational lectures for heart patients, families and friends. Sessions are presented by physicians and other health care personnel. Free blood pressure screenings are available upon request after each meeting. For more information, call 914-681-1037.

Huntington’s Disease Caregivers Support Group
Exchange ideas and resources with others who understand how you feel. Meets on the last Wednesday of every month, Wednesday May 27th at 5:30 pm in the WPHC Medical Library. To register or for more information, call 203-219-6963.

Ostomy Support Group
A support group for ostomy patients and those with related intestinal disorders. All ages are welcome for open and frank discussions of life as an “ostomate” in a casual setting. The group meets on the third Tuesday of every month, May 19th, at 7:30 pm in the Medical Library. Parenting Group

Perinatal Bereavement Support Group
Free support group for those who have lost a pregnancy at any stage or have had an infant die. Grandparents are also welcome.  Meets in the back of Jazzman’s Café in the Main Lobby.  For dates, times and more information, please call 914-681-2LOS (2567).

Social Skills Group

Stroke Support Group- May’s Topic: Coping with Stress through Meditation

THE ANXIETY AND PHOBIA TREATMENT CENTER
WPHC’s Anxiety and Phobia Treatment center is the first hospital-based center of its kind in the country—providing groundbreaking therapies and programs since 1971. For details on the programs listed below, call 914-681-1038.             

Anxiety & Phobia Support Groups
Ongoing support groups are held for people with phobias, panic attacks and anxiety disorders.  Anxiety and Phobia Support Group meets Wednesdays at 7:00 pm, cost is $30 per meeting; or Wednesday at 12:00 pm, cost is $20 per meeting.  Sessions meet in room 4310 at the Hospital.  Call 914-681-1038 for registration or additional information.

Freedom to Fly Workshop
Six-session program held at Westchester County Airport and led by Martin Seif, Ph.D. Learn to overcome your fear of flying with education and supportive exposure. Group members participate in a graduation flight to Boston. Next workshop begins Fall 2009 (date TBD).  Call 681-1038 for more information.

Health Anxiety Program
A six-week program for people with an exaggerated fear of physical illness and who worry constantly about their health. Led by Martin Diner, MD. Next session beings May 18th at 6:00pm. Call 681-1038 for more information.

Obsessive Compulsive Support Group
Learn how to use cognitive-behavioral and yoga relaxation techniques to manage and overcome obsessions and compulsions in a supportive environment. Group meets Saturdays, from 11:00 am- 12:30 noon. Phobia Workshops
Participate in nine weekly group meetings with a professional, and seven one-hour practice sessions with a phobia counselor.  Overcome fears and phobias using a cognitive behavioral and supportive exposure approach. Public Speaking/Social Anxiety Program
Weekly meetings focused on social anxiety and public speaking. Work at your own pace, attempting manageable yet challenging exercises without pressure to perform. With hard work and with our systematic approach, confidence and ability will dramatically increase. Group meets Thursdays at 5:30 pm. Childbirth Classes
Childbirth education and a Lamaze refresher class taught by independent, certified instructors. Weekday and weekend classes are available. Call 1 800-OK-BIRTH for more information and registration.

Child Passenger Safety Program
A program offered by White Plains Hospital Center and the Greenburgh Police Department with the intention to educate parents and caregivers on car seat safety, injury prevention, and health promotion, and to ensure that babies and children are correctly and safely secured while traveling in a motor vehicle. Last year the child seat safety program inspected over 1400 car seats and only 10 were installed correctly!

Child Passenger Safety Seminar & Inspection:
Parents and caregivers can sign up for this free program- held on the first Tuesday of every month, May 5 at 7:00 pm to learn more about child passenger safety and proper installation. Call 914-681-2444 to register.

Child Safety Seat Check
Experts are available to check your car seat for free on the first and third Saturday of each month, May 2 & 16 from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm at the Greenburgh Police Department Child Seat Inspection Station at 11 Hillside Avenue. No appointments are necessary.

Neonatal and Maternity Center Tours
Come take a free tour of White Plains Hospital Center’s award winning William & Sylvia Silberstein Neonatal and Maternity Center. Pre-registration is required. Call 914-681-1234 for more information and to register.

Parenting and Infant Care Class
Expecting a baby, but have no idea what to really expect? Join us and learn parenting skill tips and basic infant care skills. Cost is $25 per person/$30 per couple. Call 914-681-1234 for more information and to register.

Planned Cesarean Section Delivery Class
Recommended for all expectant couples having a cesarean birth. Whether it is your first cesarean, or a repeat, this class will provide you with everything you need to know before delivery. Classes are taught by labor and delivery staff of White Plains Hospital Center and will cover every aspect of your stay, including; how to prepare, what to expect before, during and after surgery, and after you go home. In addition, participants will receive a tour of the labor and delivery unit, maternity department, and the nursery. Please call the New Beginnings Hotline at 914-681-1234 to register. Prenatal Breastfeeding Class
This informational class will educate expectant mothers on everything they need to know about breast-feeding. Babies are welcome. Classes are held the fourth Monday of every month, May 25, from 7:00-9:00pm. Cost is $25 per person, $30 per couple. Class size is limited. Call 914-681-1234 to register.

Pregnancy-Related Physical Therapy-
Are you experiencing back or pelvic pain during your pregnancy or just after delivery? Ask your doctor to refer you to our specially trained physical therapist at White Plains Hospital Physical Therapy Center at Rye Brook.  Call 681-1116 for more information or to schedule an appointment.

Sibling Preparation Class
A special class designed to help big brothers and big sisters prepare for a new baby. Expectant parents and children aged 3-6 years old are welcome to attend. Mall Walkers
Walk for fitness and fun!  This group meets three times a week: Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday 9:00 – 10:00 am, at the Galleria Mall, Fashion Level 2.  Participants walk at their own pace in an environment supervised by WPHC health care professionals.  This program is free. Voice Care Emergency Response

Cancer Genetics Program
White Plains Hospital Center offers genetic counseling to individuals with a personal or family history of cancer. Look Good…Feel Better
Beauty techniques for women undergoing chemotherapy and radiation therapy treatments. Meets the first Tuesday of every other month. The next session will begin in June. Registration is required- please call 914-681-2701 for more information or to register.

The Men’s Health Forum
If you or your spouse has recently been diagnosed with prostate cancer, is currently in treatment, or has completed treatment, this forum is for you. Each month a guest speaker discusses various health topics related to prostate cancer. Following the lecture, spouses meet separately with a volunteer family support person. Yoga
Interactive Yoga Therapy combines the timeless insights of yoga with the latest advances in mind and body health. New classes will begin on Tuesdays May 12-June 30th from 7:00pm-8:15pm. Please call 914-681-2701 for more information or to register for the class. Fee $80.

Sharps Program
For your safety and the safety of others, WPHC collects used hypodermic needles (sharps) for safe disposal.  Used sharps may be brought to the Security Office, located in the Emergency Room waiting area, daily between 8:00 am and 4:00 pm.
