Upcoming Events At Phelps Memorial Hospital

Westchester Health NewsSleepy Hollow, NY - Phelps Memorial Hospital Center's Healthy Life series continues to offer the community a wide range of programs on health-related subjects, as well as numerous health screenings and support groups.

All events take place on the Phelps campus, unless otherwise noted. The Phelps Healthy Life Calendar for April follows:

Wednesday, April 2, 6:30 to 8 p.m.: Stroke Support Group. Meeting the first Wednesday of each month. For stroke survivors, their families, friends and caregivers. Meets in the Walkway Conference Room at Phelps. Call 914-366-3397 for information.

Thursdays, April 3 and 17, 2 to 3:30 p.m.: Drop-In Bereavement Support Group. A drop-in group meeting the first and third Thursdays of the month for adults struggling with the loss of a loved one. The group is led by Bess Steiger, Bereavement Coordinator, and meets in the James House at Phelps. Suggested donation is $5 per session. Call 914-366-3325 for information.

Thursdays, beginning April 3, 6:30 to 8 p.m.: Bereavement Support Group. An eight-week support group for adults struggling with the loss of a loved one. Monday, April 7, 7 to 8:30 p.m.: "The Other Reflux--Voice, Cough and Swallow Disorders." Craig H. Zalvan, MD, laryngologist and medical director of Phelps Institute for Voice and Swallowing Disorders, will discuss laryngopharyngeal reflux in the Phelps auditorium. Call 914-366-3220 to register.

Tuesday, April 8, 7 to 8:30 p.m.: Better Breathers Club-Nutritional Guidelines and Lung Disease. Amy Hendler, Registered Dietitian, will speak about nutritional guidelines and lung disease in the Walkway Conference Room at Phelps. Call 914-366-3712 to register.

Tuesday, April 8 and Tuesday, April 29, 7 to 9 p.m.; Hypnosis for Weight Loss. Presented by certified hypnotherapist Sara Oppenheim in the Phelps auditorium. Cost: $50. Call 914-366-3220 to register.

Monday and Tuesday, April 14 and 15, 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.: Defensive Driving. This two-evening certification program lowers insurance premiums, reduces violation points, and sharpens driving skills. Presented by Robert Fogel in the Phelps auditorium. Cost: $40. Call 914-366-3220 to register.

Monday, April 14, 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.: Chronic Cough Clinic. This screening is for people with a chronic or recurrent cough, or one that is non-responsive to common treatments and medications. Presented by Craig H. Zalvan, M.D., laryngologist and medical director for Phelps Institute for Voice and Swallowing Disorders, in Prompt Care, next to the Phelps Emergency Department. April 15, 16, 18, 29 and 30: Hearing Screenings. These free hearing screenings will help participants determine if a complete diagnostic test is called for. Conducted by Susan D. Reilly, MS, CCC-A, at the Donald R. Reed Speech & Hearing Center at Phelps, 777 N. Broadway, Suite 303. Call 914-366-3010 to schedule an appointment.

Wednesday, April 16, 6 to 7:30 p.m.: Celebrate World Voice Day. Participants will learn about the voice, good vocal habits, and how to prevent vocal injury. Entertainment and refreshments will be provided. Presented by Craig H. Zalvan, MD, laryngologist and medical director of Phelps Institute for Voice and Swallowing Disorders; Leah Ross-Kugler, MS, CCC-SLP; and Arinne Tress, MS, CCC-SLP at the Donald R. Thursday, April 17, 6:30 to 8 p.m.: What's New in Total Hip Replacement? An overview of anterior total hip arthroplasty, including demonstration of the special instruments and table used for this type of hip replacement surgery. Presented by Corey Burak, MD, specializing in orthopedic surgery, in the Phelps auditorium. Call 914-366-3220 to register.

Monday, April 21, 7 to 9 p.m.: Growing Younger--Quick, Non-invasive Solutions. Registrants will learn about non-invasive procedures that address facial aging, skin discoloration, sagging cheeks and jowls, "turkey neck," and dark circles and bags under the eyes. Presented by Judith Jay, MD, otolaryngologist, in the Phelps auditorium. Call 914-366-3220 to register.

Tuesday, April 22, 2 to 4 p.m.: Snoring Clinic. Participants will undergo a brief screening examination to determine whether they are candidates for a complete snoring and sleep apnea evaluation. Tuesday, April 22, 10 a.m. to noon and 1:30 to 2:30 p.m.: Speech and Language Screening for Pre-Schoolers. This free speech/language screening will determine if a child needs a full diagnostic evaluation. Presented by Kim M. Ventimiglia, MS, CCC-SLP, Speech-Language Pathologist at the Donald R. Reed Speech and Hearing Center at Phelps, 777 N. Broadway, Suite 303. Call 914-366-3010 to schedule an appointment.

Monday, April 28, 10 a.m. to noon: Blood Glucose Screening. This screening will be conducted by Barbara Schaut, RN, at Club Fit in Briarcliff Manor. Call 914-366-3220 to register.

Wednesday, April 30, 6:30 to 9 p.m.: Treatment for Rheumatoid Arthritis and Other Inflammatory Diseases. Participants will learn about biologics, the newest treatment for rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis, juvenile arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, Crohn's Disease and other inflammatory conditions. Moderator Richard Parrino, MD, rheumatologist, will be joined by a panel of gastroenterologists and dermatologists in the Phelps auditorium. Call 914-366-3220 to register.
