White Plains, NY - County lawmakers have scheduled a public hearing on a proposed local law that would ban the sale in Westchester of cough syrup containing Dextromethorphan (DXM) to minors.
The public hearing will take place at the Board’s next regularly scheduled meeeting on Monday, August 11, 2008 at 7:30 PM.
The measure was introduced by County Legislator Judy Myers (D-WF, Larchmont) last year and reviewed by the Board’s Community Services and Legislation Committees.
Nationwide concern has erupted in recent months over the growing popularity of DXM-use among teenagers to “get high.” In Westchester, over the past year alone, two fatalities have been attributed to the cough syrup ingredient. The Board’s proposed action would expressly prohibit the sale of over-the-counter DXM cough suppressants to minors under the age of 18 throughout the county.
Speakers can sign up starting an hour in advance at the Board’s 8th floor Michaelian Office Building office.
