Open Door Medical Centers Receives $20K Gift

Westchester Health NewsOssining, NY - Open Door Family Medical Centers has received a gift of $20,000 from the Breast Cancer Alliance of Greenwich.  The money will be used by the non-profit community health center to continue to provide education, screenings and treatment for breast cancer to Open Door patients.

An article published online by the American Cancer Society in December 2007 and in the Cancer Journal For Clinicians in January/February 2008 (Association of Insurance with Cancer Care Utilization and Outcomes), noted studies showing that women who do not have health insurance are “about half as likely as privately-insured women to have received a mammogram in the past two years” and are much more likely than women with health insurance to be diagnosed with advanced cancer.  By providing access to quality medical care to the economically disadvantaged Open Door has been successful in providing early detection and treatment options to a vulnerable population resulting in far more positive outcomes.  The $20,000 gift from The Breast Cancer Alliance of Greenwich will help to support Open Door’s existing Women’s Breast Health Initiative.  In 2007 3,279 uninsured women were able to take advantage of Breast Health services through the initiative.

The Breast Cancer Alliance is a fast-growing, dynamic organization that has raised and dispersed over $9,000,000 since their inception in 1996. They are the fourth largest non-profit, private funding provider to breast cancer research in the United States.  In addition, as the organization continues to grow they are able to provide increasingly large sums to support vital, cutting-edge breast cancer research each year and to expand their educational programs.

“We are honored to be the recipient of this gift that will provide an enormous amount of support to our Women’s Breast Health Initiative.  We are committed to reducing the barrier to health care many people without insurance face by providing access to quality care to our most vulnerable population, the uninsured and underinsured in our community,” said Open Door’s President/CEO Lindsay Farrell.

Open Door Family Medical Centers serves a vast multi-cultural community and has provided top quality medical and dental care and social services to the Westchester community, particularly the economically disadvantaged, for 35 years.  The organization has four centers in Westchester located in Ossining, Port Chester, Mt. Kisco and Sleepy Hollow,  In addition Open Door operates School Based Health Centers in Port Chester at The Edison Elementary School and the Kennedy Magnet School and Port Chester High School.   Funding for the federally qualified community health center comes from local, state and federal grants as well as private foundations and individuals.
