Ossining, NY - Open Door Family Medical Centers has received a grant for $75,000 from the Susan G. Koman for the Cure – Greater New York Affiliate.
The one year grant will be used by the non-profit community health center to support their “Breast Health Education, Outreach and Case Management” program that serves thousands of Open Door’s female patients.
An article published online by the American Cancer Society in December 2007 and in the Cancer Journal For Clinicians in January/February 2008 (Association of Insurance with Cancer Care Utilization and Outcomes), noted studies showing that women who do not have health insurance are “about half as likely as privately-insured women to have received a mammogram in the past two years” and are much more likely than women with health insurance to be diagnosed with advanced cancer. By providing access to quality medical care to the economically disadvantaged Open Door has been successful in providing early detection and treatment options to a vulnerable population resulting in far more positive outcomes. In 2007 3,279 uninsured women were able to take advantage of Breast Health services at Open Door. The $75,000 gift from Susan G. Koman for the Cure will help to ensure these women and more will receive quality the information and care that all women deserve.
Susan G. Komen for the Cure is the world's largest, boldest and most progressive grassroots network of survivors and activists, the only organization fighting to cure breast cancer at every stage. To date, they have invested $1 billion in research, education and health services.
“We are honored to be the recipient of this gift that will provide an enormous amount of support to our “Breast Health Education, Outreach and Case Management” program. We are committed to reducing the barrier to health care many people without insurance face by providing access to quality education, outreach and care to our most vulnerable population, the uninsured and underinsured in our community,” said Open Door’s President/CEO Lindsay Farrell.
