New Patient Education Initiative

Westchester Health NewsNew Rochelle, NY - Find out how you can make the most of your doctor’s visits and how to get the best health care possible when Westchester County launches a new patient education initiative, on Wednesday, Feb. 6, 10 a.m. at the White Plains YWCA, 515 North St.

More than 50 representatives of Westchester’s medical community, non-profit organizations, religious leaders and community groups are expected to attend. The event is open to the public.

“It’s My Healthcare” was developed in partnership with prominent physicians and health care professionals in Westchester to educate patients about quality health care – both what it means and how to get it – and provide them with the tools they need to be active participants in their health care.

The presentation will include a short video that shows three different instances of how patients interact with their doctors and why it is so important to prepare for a medical visit. For example, patients should bring along their medications and a list of their symptoms to share with their doctor.

“Medical professionals in Westchester are dedicated to their patients, and many physicians and hospital executives worked long and hard with us to help develop these resources,’’ said Westchester County Health Commissioner Dr. Joshua Lipsman. “Residents who make use of the brochures, DVD and tips in “It’s My Healthcare’’ will find them helpful as they partner with their physicians to get optimal care and the answers they need to make wise health care choices.’’

Following the presentation, several physicians who helped develop the materials will participate in an informal panel discussion to share why they want their patients to participate as active partners in their care.

The panelists include Dr. Janet Sullivan, the chief medical officer of the Hudson Health Plan, one of the largest Medicaid-managed health care plans in Westchester; Dr. Kira Geraci-Ciardullo, a specialist in allergy, asthma and immunology with a Mamaroneck practice, who co-chairs the task force on Quality Medical Care for the Medical Society of the State of New York; and Dr. Abe Levy, medical director and chief quality officer for the Mount Kisco Medical Group.

Brochures and DVDs will be available free of charge at the event. Starting Feb. 6, you can also go to www.westchestergov.com/itsmyhealthcare for more information.

Following this introduction, the Westchester County Health Department’s Division of Community Health will take this presentation on the road to interested community groups and organizations and can provide brochures in Spanish and English. To schedule a presentation, call the Division of Community Health at (914) 813-5227.
