According to the Alzheimer's Association, Alzheimer's disease affects 5 million Americans today. Over 20,000 are affected in Westchester Country, and the Association states that a six-fold increase in the next 45 years is likely. Those are staggering numbers, according to Metro West Daily News and multiple other sources. While the cause of Alzheimer’s disease and other related dementias still unknown, researchers are diligently working on the cure. Currently there are several treatments available to assist persons with cognitive disorders. This annual seminar on Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias will address research in new methods of treating symptoms, assisting caregivers, and enhancing the daily lives of those with the memory disorders and those whose lives are directly impacted by the effects of the disease.
The mission of the Alzheimer’s Disease Assistance Center is to increase general knowledge about Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias, to be supportive of caregivers and patients, and to direct families and professionals to available services as the needs change from the time of diagnosis through the course of the disease. The Alzheimer’s Disease Assistance Center of the Hudson Valley is located at the Memory Evaluation and Treatment Service at the Burke Rehabilitation Hospital in White Plains.
