Healthy Life Series Continues At Phelps

Westchester Health NewsSleepy Hollow, NY - Phelps Memorial Hospital Center's Healthy Life series continues to offer the community a wide range of programs on health-related subjects, as well as numerous health screenings and support groups.

All events take place on the Phelps campus, 701 N. Broadway in Sleepy Hollow, unless otherwise noted. The Phelps Healthy Life Calendar for October follows:

Wednesday, October 1, 6:30 to 8 p.m.: Stroke Support Group. Meeting the first Wednesday of each month. For stroke survivors, their families, friends and caregivers. Meets in the Walkway Conference Room at Phelps. Call 914-366-3397 for information.

Monday, October 6, 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.: Swallowing Problem Screening. This free clinic will help identify various swallowing problems, including food getting stuck, pain or trouble when swallowing, throat clearing, reflux-related problems and more. Presented by Dr. Craig H. Zalvan, Laryngologist, Medical Director of Phelps Institute for Voice and Swallowing Disorders. In PromptCare (next to the emergency department). Monday, October 6, 2 to 3:30 p.m.: Refresher Course: Lee Silverman Voice Treatment (LSVT) for Parkinson's Patients. This refresher course is offered to those who have graduated from LSVT or have been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease and are interested in learning about an intensive voice therapy program designed to strengthen the voice. Conducted in the Walkway Conference Room at Phelps. Call 914-366-3010 to register.

Tuesdays, October 7 through November 25, 2 to 3:30 p.m.: Bereavement Support Group. An eight-week support group for adults struggling with the loss of a loved one. The group is led by Bess Steiger, Bereavement Coordinator, and meets in Conference Room 225 of the Medical Services Building at Phelps, 755 N. Broadway. Suggested donation is $50 for eight weeks. Tuesdays, October 7 and 14, 7 to 9 p.m.: Hypnosis for Weight Loss. This class offers an easy and natural way to lose weight and keep it off. Conducted by Sara Oppenheim, Certified Hypnotherapist, in the Phelps auditorium, for a fee of $50. Call 914-366-3220 to register.

Tuesday, October 14, 6 p.m.: Better Breather's Club. Pulmonologist Gary Lehrman, MD, will speak about breathing problems, on the B level in the Phelps Pulmonary Gym. Call 914-366-3712 to register.

Wednesday, October 15, 6 to 9 p.m.: Treatment of Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis. This free class offers information about treatment to help reduce pain and disability associated with Crohn's disease and Ulcerative Colitis. Thursday, October 16, 7 p.m.: Lymphedema. This seminar about lymphedema (swelling due to damage to the lymph system) offers information on how swelling can be decreased and managed through proper therapy and home management. Presented by Phelps Physical and Occupational Therapy Department: Joanne Gelsi, MS, PT, CLT; Elisa Schwarts, PT, CLT; Amy Kennedy, DPT, CLT, LANA; Susan O'Reilly, OTR/L, CLT; and Anjum Lone, OTR/L, CHT, CLT, in the Phelps auditorium. Tuesday, October 21, 7 p.m.: Mental Imagery Methods from Religious Traditions for Relaxation and Holistic Healing. Thursday, October 23, 6:30 p.m.: Demystifying Computer-Assisted Surgery for Total Knee Replacement. Join Dr. Corey Burak, a Phelps orthopedic surgeon trained in the latest surgical approaches and techniques in knee replacement, as he demonstrates a simulated total knee replacement using the same computer-aided surgical navigation technology and tools he uses in the operating room.
