Healthy Life Series Continues At Phelps

ImageSleepy Hollow, NY - Phelps Memorial Hospital Center's Healthy Life series continues to offer the community a wide range of programs on health-related subjects, as well as numerous health screenings and support groups.

All events take place on the Phelps campus, 701 North Broadway in Sleepy Hollow, unless otherwise noted. The Phelps Healthy Life Calendar for May follows:

Wednesday, May 7, 6:30 to 8 p.m.: Stroke Support Group. Meeting the first Wednesday of each month. For stroke survivors, their families, friends and caregivers. Meets in the Walkway Conference Room at Phelps. Call 914-366-3397 for information.

Thursdays, May 1 and 15, 2 to 3:30 p.m.: Drop-In Bereavement Support Group. A drop-in group meeting the first and third Thursdays of the month for adults struggling with the loss of a loved one. The group is led by Bess Steiger, Bereavement Coordinator, and meets in the James House at Phelps. Suggested donation is $5 per session. Call 914-366-3325 for information.

Tuesday, May 6, 10 a.m. to noon and 1:30 to 2:30 p.m.: Speech and Language Screening for Pre-Schoolers. This free speech/language screening will determine if a child needs a full diagnostic evaluation. Presented by Kim M. Ventimiglia, MS, CCC-SLP, Speech-Language Pathologist at the Donald R. Reed Speech and Hearing Center at Phelps, 777 North Broadway, Suite 303. Call 914-366-3010 to schedule an appointment.

Wednesday, May 7, 10 to 11 a.m.: Post-Polio Syndrome. This syndrome can develop many years after the initial illness. Participants will learn about the causes and treatments, including the role of exercise, medications and lifestyle changes. Presented by Charles McGowan, MD; Phyllis Mandel, Physical Therapist; Joanne Gelsi, MS, Physical Therapist; Anjum Lone, OTR/L; and Judith Christopher, Ph.D., CCC-SLP in the Phelps auditorium. Monday, May 12, 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.: Swallowing Problem Screening. This free screening is for individuals who have problems with swallowing solids or liquids, regurgitation, throat clearing, phlegm and reflux-related problems. Presented by Craig H. Zalvan, MD, laryngologist and medical director of Phelps Institute for Voice and Swallowing Disorders, in Prompt Care, next to the Phelps Emergency Department. Call 914-366-3220 to register.

Monday, May 12, 7 to 9 p.m.: Hypnosis for Weight Loss. Presented by certified hypnotherapist Sara Oppenheim in the Phelps auditorium. Cost is $50. Call 914-366-3220 to register.

Tuesday, May 13, 7 to 9 p.m.: Mental Imagery Methods for Relaxation and Holistic Healing. This program explores how mental imagery can affect body, mind and spirit. Registrants will learn how meditative relaxation can help them experience holistic healing. Presented by Loyola Amalraj, Ph.D., author and educator, in the Phelps auditorium. Tuesday, May 13, 7 to 8 p.m.: Better Breather's Club. This program about traveling with confidence is designed specifically for individuals with lung disease. Presented by Pam McKenzie, Seapuffers Travel Agency, in the Walkway Conference Room at Phelps. Call 914-366-3172 to register.

Monday, May 19, 10 a.m. to noon: Blood Pressure Screening. This screening will be conducted by Mhairi Craig, RN, at Club Fit in Briarcliff Manor. Call 914-366-3220 to register.

Monday and Tuesday, May 19 and 20, 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.: Defensive Driving. This two-evening certification program lowers insurance premiums, reduces violation points, and sharpens driving skills. Presented by Robert Fogel in the Phelps auditorium. Cost: $40. Call 914-366-3220 to register.
