About MS and The National MS Society, Southern NY Chapter
Multiple sclerosis is an auto-immune disease that attacks the myelin tissue of the brain and/or central nervous system. Today MS affects over 400,000 Americans, has no known cause or cure and for unknown reasons, is two to three times as common in women as men - the onset usually occurring in the prime of life between the ages of 20-50
The National MS Society believes that moving is not just something you can or cannot do, but is, rather, who you are. That is why, in 2007 over 200,000 volunteers from MS Society Chapters throughout the country raised over $50 million to continue to fund cutting-edge research and provide local support and programs – moving closer to a world free of MS. The Southern New York Chapter raised $1.8 million in 2007 through individual giving and major events that included 5 Walks; the Dystel Memorial Golf Classic for MS; Swim the Hudson for MS; the Women Against MS Luncheon (WAMS); and Bike MS: the Tappan Zee Bike Tour for MS.
