New Rochelle, NY - October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, so help spread the word that mammograms are available to Westchester women through Westchester County’s Healthy Living Partnership, regardless of income or health insurance status.
Call the Healthy Living Partnership at 914-813-5000 to arrange for a free mammogram and tell the women in your life to do the same.
“Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths among women in Westchester County,” said Dr. Joshua Lipsman, Commissioner of Health for Westchester County. “In 2005, 210 Westchester women lost their lives to breast cancer. Routine breast exams and annual mammograms are the best way to prevent many of these deaths.”
The Healthy Living Partnership provides free breast cancer screening and diagnostic services to Westchester’s uninsured and underinsured women through a network of primary care providers, neighborhood health centers, hospitals, radiology sites, gastroenterologists, breast surgeons and community partners. Colorectal and cervical cancer screening are also available.
Over the past year, the HLP has provided more than 5,000 clinical breast exams and 2,000 screening mammograms free of charge to medically underserved women in Westchester County. More than 25,000 Westchester women are eligible for free breast health screenings and mammograms through the program, yet only 20% of these women use these services each year.
For the third year in a row, the Healthy Living Partnership has received a grant from The Greater New York City Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure to provide additional assistance to women who need follow-up services after an abnormal breast cancer screening. The grant allows for a clinical nurse coordinator who works with women to address financial, transportation and language barriers that may affect their ability to get follow-up care.
For more information, call the Westchester County Health Department at (914) 813-5000 or visit www.westchestergov.com/health. A recorded information line at (914) 813-5356 is also available to provide information about these services 24 hours-a-day.
