Valhalla, NY - Blythedale Children’s Hospital will host a special daylong conference titled, “Exploring Ethical Dilemmas and Legal Principles in Pediatric Practice” on Friday, October 10, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Sponsored by Blythedale and the New York Regional Chapter of the Society of Pediatric Nursing, the seminar will focus on clarifying and exploring both ethical dilemmas and legal principles facing clinicians, children and their families. It is also designed to provide key elements to practice in a legal and ethical manner.
Presenters will include: Robert McCauley, MD, FAAP, DABHPN, Medical Ethicist and Episcopal Minister; Rev. Debra Slade, BA, MA, Chaplain, Blythedale Children’s Hospital; Joelle Mast, MD, PhD, Chief Medical Officer, Chair of Ethics Committee, Blythedale Children’s Hospital; Patricia Kischak, RN, MBA, VP Risk Management, Hospitals Insurance Company; Jose Guzman, Jr., RN, MS, Director of Risk Management, Hospitals Insurance Company; Francine Thomas, RN, MA, Risk Management Coordinator, Hospitals Insurance Company; Barbara DeCesare, RN, JD, MPH, VP, Swiss Reinsurance American Corporation; and Tony Stern, MD, Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychiatry, New York Medical College.
Registration will begin at 8:00 a.m. with coffee, followed by a welcome from Blythedale President & CEO, Larry Levine and Blythedale Chief Nursing Officer Linda Hurwitz, MS, RN, NEA-BC, CNO. Dr. McCauley will be the keynote speaker on “Ethical Dilemmas in Pediatrics”, followed by an Ethics Panel including Dr. McCauley, Dr. Mast, and Rev. Slade. Additional topics of the day will include Documenting Legally, Accountability in Pediatric Practice, and Finding Our Way: A Multi-Faith View of Moral Choice and Responsibility.
Tuition is $125, including lunch. For Blythedale employees and members of the Society of Pediatric Nurses, the fee is $40. Student and New York Regional Chapter members’ tuition is $25.
