Blythedale Names New Chief Of Pediatric Neurology

Westchester Health NewsValhalla, NY - Jay E. Selman, M.D., a pediatric neurologist and sleep medicine specialist for more than 30 years, has been appointed to the new position of Chief of Pediatric Neurology at Blythedale Children’s Hospital.

Dr. Selman, who joined Blythedale in 2002 as a consultant in Child Neurology, has been a professor at several major university hospitals and has published articles in numerous medical journals. Currently, he is Clinical Associate Professor of Neurology at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and Visiting Clinical Assistant Professor of Neurology at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine-Montefiore Hospital and Medical Center. He is also Attending Neurologist at Northern Westchester Hospital in Mount Kisco, NY.

“Dr. Selman brings a wealth of experience to this new position, and we are pleased to welcome him to Blythedale,” said Joelle Mast, Ph.D., M.D., Chief Medical Officer of Blythedale Children’s Hospital. “His knowledge and expertise in pediatric neurology will be a great asset to Blythedale in continuing our mission of providing the highest quality care to children with complex healthcare needs.”

Dr. Selman earned his A.B and M.S. (Speech and Hearing) degrees at Washington University in St. Louis, and graduated from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School (Dallas) in 1973. He completed residencies in pediatrics and neurology with a Pediatric Neurology Fellowship at Bronx Municipal (Jacobi) – Albert Einstein College of Medicine from 1973-1978. 

Following his training, Dr. Selman joined the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in 1978, followed by North Shore University Hospital two years later. In 1983, he joined a neurology practice in Mount Kisco, which he continued until he relocated his office to Blythedale. He was previously the Director of the Stroke Program at Northern Westchester Hospital from 2004-2007.

Dr. Selman holds Board Certification from the American Board of Pediatrics; American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology with Special Competence in Child Neurology; and with Added Qualification (sub-Boards) in Clinical Neurophysiology, Neurodevelopmental Disabilities and Sleep Medicine. His special areas of interest include developmental disorders, autism, traumatic brain injury, headaches and migraines, tics and Tourette Syndrome, and the full range of sleep disorders.

Dr. Selman is a member of numerous professional organizations including the American Epilepsy Society, American Academy of Neurology and Movement Disorders Section, Child Neurology Society, and Epilepsy Society of Southern New York. He currently serves on several committees at Northern Westchester Hospital Center. He is a resident of Scarsdale, NY.
