Westchester Health NewsValhalla, NY - Blythedale Children’s Hospital will join with Kohl’s in a kickoff event at the hospital on Thursday, October 2 to announce its new “Eat Well, Be Well Program for Adolescents.”

The community-based nutrition education program, which is for children aged 11 to 14, is being funded by a $172,183 grant from Kohl’s Cares for Kids®. The program provides area schools with classroom instruction by Blythedale’s registered dietitian on the benefits of healthy eating and living for adolescents.

The October 2 kickoff event, which will run from 3:30 - 5:30 pm, is open to the public. It will feature a check presentation by Kohl’s officials as well as demonstrations of healthy meal preparation, fun fitness activities and education about the hospital’s free school-based programs.

Since 2000, Kohl’s has donated $1,292,855 to Blythedale Children’s Hospital. Kohl’s commitment to Blythedale is made possible by Kohl’s Cares for Kids®. Net profits from the sale of special merchandise supports children’s health and education; through 2007, Kohl’s has raised more than $102 million for such initiatives nationwide. The program also includes the Kohl’s Kids Who Care® Scholarship Program for youth volunteers, fundraising gift cards for local schools and nonprofit groups, and an associate program to encourage volunteerism.

Blythedale’s community-based nutrition education programs provide school staff, students and parents with the tools necessary to help children develop healthy eating habits. Marie Roth, Registered Dietitian at Blythedale Children’s Hospital, has spoken about healthy eating to more than 16,000 Kindergarten through 5th grade students in Westchester and Putnam.
