Annual Bike For Multiple Sclerosis

Westchester Health NewsWhite Plains, NY - Registration is now open for the annual BIKE MS: “Tappan Zee Bike Tour” on Sunday, September 28.

One of the National MS Society, Southern NY Chapter’s most challenging events – Bike MS offers cyclists of all levels the once-a-year-only opportunity to enjoy the exhilarating experience of riding their bicycles across the mighty Tappan Zee Bridge in a traffic free lane.  This is the only time that the New York Thruway Authority clears a lane and allows cyclists to cross the span; and it is all to benefit the National MS Society, Southern New York Chapter. Registration is $40 and cyclists are required to raise a minimum of $125 to participate in the event.  For more information about Bike MS and to register call Tom Taylor (914) 694-1655 x42 or email This email address is being protected from spam bots, you need Javascript enabled to view it .  Information and registration are also available online at www.WeBike4MS.org.

The National MS Society, Southern New York Chapter provides programs and services to thousands of people living with MS in Westchester, Rockland, Putnam, Orange and Sullivan Counties.

The Bike MS "Tappan Zee Tour" tour begins at Kraft Foods (555 South Broadway, Tarrytown) and offers two spectacular routes. The 20 mile route turns around at Rockland Lake State Park and returns across the Tappan Zee to the starting point at Kraft Foods.  For those with a more energetic and adventurous spirit, a 60 mile route takes cyclists up the Western shores of the Hudson and across the Bear Mountain Bridge, climbing the infamous “Goat Trail” and descending south along the Eastern side of the river to return to Tarrytown.  Bike MS is a perfect adventure outing for families and ‘weekend’ cyclists as well as their more serious counterparts who enjoy challenges of distance and endurance.

"The New York State Thruway Authority has been an incredible partner in this event for many years.  Their support, which includes an incredible cheering section as the riders take to the bridge, and their willingness to close a lane to traffic, makes this one of the most exciting and unusual events in our area,” said William O’Reilly, President of the Southern NY Chapter of the National MS Society.  “Every year riders tell us that it is the exhilaration of riding over the Tappan Zee Bridge at the start of this Tour that makes it so special".

Day of event check in is from 6:30-7:15am at Kraft Foods, 555 South Broadway, Tarrytown.  Cyclists will take off for the Tappan Zee at 7:30am sharp.  Because the MS Society has limited time and access to the Tappan Zee Bridge, cyclists who arrive late will have to be bused to the West side of the span where they may join either the 20 or 60 mile tour. For safety reasons, no exceptions will be made.. The minimum age for cyclists interested in the TZ Bike Tour is 12 years.

About MS and The National MS Society, Southern NY Chapter
Multiple sclerosis is an auto-immune disease that attacks the myelin tissue of the brain and/or central nervous system. Today it affects over 400,000 Americans, has no known cause or cure and is twice as common in women as in men.

Multiple Sclerosis stops people from moving.  The National MS Society and each of its 50 Chapters, including the Southern New York Chapter, exist to make sure that it doesn’t.  In 2007 over 200,000 volunteers from MS Society Chapters throughout the country raised over $50 million to continue to fund cutting-edge research and provide local support and programs to people who have this devastating disease and their families.

In 2007 the Southern New York Chapter of the National MS Society, which is based in White Plains and serves clients and families in Westchester, Putnam, Rockland, Orange and Sullivan Counties raised $1.8 million through individual giving and major events that included 5 Walks; the Dystel Memorial Golf Classic for MS; Swim the Hudson for MS; the Women Against MS Luncheon (WAMS); and Bike MS: the Tappan Zee Bike Tour.

Cyclists of all levels are encouraged to join the movement and take the ride of a lifetime across the Tappan Zee Bridge for Bike MS on Sunday September 28.  For additional information contact Tom Taylor at (914) 694-1655 x42 or email This email address is being protected from spam bots, you need Javascript enabled to view it .  Information and registration is also available online at www.WeBike4MS.org.
