Yonkers, NY - The City of Yonkers Annual Memorial Day Parade will take place this Sunday, May 18 starting at 2:00 p.m. at South Broadway and Radford Streets.
The parade is one of the main Memorial Day activities taking place in Yonkers throughout the months of May and June to recognize and honor brave individuals who lost their lives fighting for our Country.
Prior to Sunday's parade there will be a special ceremony at 11:00 a.m. at the Veterans Memorial located on South Broadway in front of the steps that lead to City Hall.
At a ceremony earlier this week, Mayor Amicone joined the Director of Veteran Services Al Ramsey and several local veterans to designate Harold Dworetzky as the official Chairman of the 2008 Memorial Day Committee. Dworetzky, who served with the United States Army in Korea as an Ordinance Specialist, is currently the Commander of the Jewish War Veterans Post #68 in Yonkers.
Leading this year's parade as Grand Marshal is decorated veteran Louis Nigrello. Nigrello served in the United States Navy from 1943 to 1946 as a Radioman 1st Class on the USS LSM 144. After his active service, he became a dedicated volunteer and supporter of various veterans programs and activities throughout the City of Yonkers.
The parade committee is working with the City and local veteran groups on several ceremonies and activities taking place throughout Yonkers to honor and pay tribute to all veterans. Mayor Amicone invites the community to take part in the City's various Memorial Day Activities.
