Yonkers, NY - Due to severe cutbacks in the city's recently adopted budget, the City of Yonkers has canceled this year's 4th of July fireworks display.
The primary factor in cancelling the annual event is the anticipated cost of more than $100,000 in police overtime required to maintain safety during the festivity.
The city's Fiscal Year 2010 Budget, which is due to take effect on July 1, was adopted three weeks late by the City Council at a special meeting held on Saturday, June 20. The council's adopted budget included a $2.2 million, or 18% cut to police overtime.
