 Mt. Kisco, NY - Westchester County Parks Magazine and two of the department’s head staffers are the recipients of three prestigious awards from the New York State Recreation and Parks Society (NYSRPS) this spring for their work in promoting parks and recreation.
“With 50 parks and recreational areas on over 18,000 acres of parkland, the county parks department, which serves three million visitors annually, is one of the most visible departments in the county government,” County Executive Andy Spano said. “I applaud the dedicated, professional staff that not only plans and implements the best recreational opportunities that Westchester – and New York State – has to offer, but also does a great job getting the word out to the public about all these great programs and services.”
The NYSRPS is a national nonprofit organization devoted to advancing parks, recreation and conservation efforts that enhance the quality of life for all Americans, and works to extend the social, health and economic benefits of parks and recreation throughout the United States.
Commissioner Joseph A. Stout was presented with the Distinguished Service Award, the most prestigious recognition bestowed by the agency. Stout has made countless contributions in the field of parks, recreation and conservation in various local communities throughout his 30-year career, as well as in his capacity as county parks commissioner over the past six years.
In addition, Joseph Lemischak, director of programs and services, was presented with the association’s Robert W. Miner “Good Guy” award, for his leadership, hard work and dedication in planning, organizing and coordinating all aspects of the 2007 Summer Empire State Games in Westchester.
He said that Westchester County Parks Magazine: Your Year-round Guide to 2007, which was produced and designed by the parks’ marketing division, was awarded the 2008 Publication Award for Promotional Brochure (Class III). The guide, which offers a wealth of information on county parks, golf courses, nature preserves, Playland amusement park and much more, was distributed all over the county throughout the year. The publication has generated numerous inquiries and has received many favorable reviews and comments from the public.
“Here in Westchester, we pride ourselves in knowing that we have a Parks Department with staff that is second to none,” Spano said. “It’s wonderful when they are recognized for their hard work and dedication by an association of their peers. It’s the ‘frosting on the cake.’”
