White Plains, NY - Despite the recent rains that have swept the Westchester County area, residents in some areas still need to conserve water this summer.
Residents in White Plains, North Castle, Scarsdale and Yonkers, who are served by County Water District 1, will need to conserve water this summer because of construction that the New York City Department of Environmental Protection (NYCDEP) is doing inside the Kensico Dam. During the construction, District 1 will be receiving its water from a diversion system that was set up by the NYCDEP.
Water conservation will be very important while the construction is going on. Things residents can do to reduce water usage include: limit lawn watering, take shorter showers, fix leaks, avoid unnecessary toilet flushes and don’t run water while shaving or brushing your teeth. Additional tips on water conservation can be found at www.westchestergov.com/wateragency.
If Westchester residents conserve water this summer, there will not be any problems while the diversion system is in place. However if the available flow of water is exceeded, communities served by District 1 will experience operating difficulties such as reduced water pressure or disruptions in service. If this occurs, further restrictions on water consumption may be required during the 12 month construction period.
For additional information, residents should contact their water supplier or the Westchester County Water Agency at (914) 995-4425.
