Rob Astorino Announces Candidacy For County Executive

Westchester Government NewsValhalla, NY - Former Westchester County Legislator Rob Astorino has announced his reform candidacy for Westchester County Executive to “streamline local government, stop the tax madness, and restore a high standard of ethics to Westchester County government.”

Mr. Astorino made his announcement before a rally of supporters, from all across the county, at the Mount Pleasant Community Center in Valhalla. He was joined by his wife, Sheila, and their two children, Sean (5) and Kiley Rose (4).

“Change is coming to Westchester, and I ask you to be part of it,” Mr. Astorino said to those assembled. “Everyone in Westchester knows the challenges we face: Unsustainable tax rates, redundant government services, and self-serving incumbents who are driving this county to its knees.  The current administration has served one too many terms; it is time for a change.”

Mr. Astorino, a two term Vice-Chairman of the Westchester County Board of Ethics, said his administration would consolidate government services throughout  the county, begin zero-based budgeting to cut costs and taxes, and aggressively root out waste and corruption in County government.

Mr. Astorino, 41, a married father of two, is a life-long Westchester resident. He has been active in Westchester civic affairs for more than 20 years.  He was first elected to public office at the age of 21 as a member of the Mount Pleasant School District Board of Education, and later served as the Board’s vice president. He served for 12 years on the Mount Pleasant Town Board, including six as Deputy Supervisor and eight as Chairman of the Public Safety Committee, which oversees the Mount Pleasant Police Department. In 2003, he was elected to serve a term on the Westchester County Legislature. Mr. Astorino was the Republican candidate for Westchester County Executive in 2005, winning 42% of the vote against a deeply entrenched incumbent.

Mr. Astorino currently serves on the Westchester Business Council’s Government Action Committee; is a charter member of the Mount Pleasant Rotary Club, a member of the North Castle Land Trust, and a union member in good standing with the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists.  He is a past secretary of the Mount Pleasant Conservation Advisory Council.

Mr. Astorino has had a long career in the news radio and television industries. He was instrumental in developing 1050 ESPN Radio in New York, and is currently station manager and program director of The Catholic Channel on Sirius-XM Satellite Radio. He hosts a weekly show from St. Patrick’s Cathedral with the Archbishop of New York.

“I was born and raised in Westchester and nobody loves this county more than I do,” Mr. Astorino continued. “But every year, more friends are forced to pack up and leave because they can’t afford the taxes any longer.  I am running to do something about that, for my neighbors and yours.”
