Public Meeting To Discuss National Bike Route

Westchester Government NewsWhite Plains, NY - County Legislator Jim Maisano (R, New Rochelle) announced that he will be hosting a public meeting, along with New Rochelle City Councilmembers Chris Selin and Michael Boyle, on Monday, December 3 from 7 to 10 PM at the Trinity School Auditorium on Pelham Road, New Rochelle to hear the concerns from the public regarding a proposed national bike route that would run through Pelham Road for the East Coast Greenway.

Last week, Legislator Maisano asked the Westchester County Planning Department to halt all actions relating to this proposed bike route until his constituents are afforded the opportunity to be heard on this issue.

Legislator Maisano stated, “It is the people who live along the Pelham Road corridor that must deal with the impact from the proposed bike route.  I look forward to hearing their concerns at this meeting.  I will take my lead from my constituents on this issue and advocate on their behalf to the county and state governments.  This will be an informative and interesting meeting.”

Legislator Maisano is thankful for the assistance he has received on this issue from Councilmembers Selin and Boyle, who have been evaluating biking related issues on Pelham Road for some time now.  Since they are both leaving office next month, Legislator Maisano felt this meeting needed to be held as soon as possible, and the incoming Councilmembers, Al Tarantino and Lou Trangucci, have also been invited to the meeting.

The proposed route for the “New York State Bicycle Route 1” for the East Coast Greenway would be a 2,600 mile corridor from Maine to Florida.  Legislator Maisano added that he supports the overall theory behind the proposed bike route, but it does not appear that Pelham Road is the optimum place for it to run through New Rochelle and that it is his goal to work with the city, county and state governments to ensure that a better route is located.  He maintains it is his priority to protect the quality of life for his constituents in the Pelham Road area.
